Leelee Sobieski Bio

Leelee Sobieski

Everything about actress Leelee Sobieski is unique, from her name, to her heritage, to the friends she chooses. Her look isn’t as unique as it could be as she is often being confused for Helen Hunt, yet this is one woman who isn’t ashamed to just be herself.

Born under the name Liliane Rudabet Gloria Elsveta Sobieski on June 10, 1983, Sobieski has some important heritage on both sides. Her father, Jean Sobieski, appeared in spaghetti westerns when he was young and is now a painter. He is a descendant of Jan III Sobieski, the King of Poland in the 1600s. Her mother, Elizabeth Salomon, is a writer whose father was United States Navy captain Robert Salomon. Sobieski has described her childhood as "bohemian," seeing Shakespeare in the Park, visiting SoHo, and spending summers at her grandfather’s ranch in France.

Sobieski was discovered by a casting director in the cafeteria while attending a private school in New York City. This was for a part in Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, and while Sobieski lost the role to Kirsten Dunst, she went on to appear in the TV movie Reunion, with Marlo Thomas and Peter Strauss. Shortly after, she had her first starring role in A Horse for Danny, along with Robert Ulrich.

Guest spots on television shows such as Grace Under Fire and News Radio followed, and Sobieski eventually landed her first feature film, Jungle 2 Jungle, appearing with such big name actors as Tim Allen, Martin Short, and JoBeth Williams. Next up for Sobieski was appearing in the science fiction thriller Deep Impact about the anticipated crash of a comet. This movie also starred such notable actors as Robert Duvall, Téa Leoni, Elijah Wood, Vanessa Redgrave, and Morgan Freeman.

Sobieski starred as writer James Jones’ daughter in a fictionalized story of his life, A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries. Also starring in this were Kris Kristofferson, Barbara Hershey, and Jesse Bradford. Trying her luck with romantic comedy, Sobieski turned down the role of the popular girl and instead chose that of the math geek in Never Been Kissed, starring alongside Drew Barrymore, David Arquette, and Molly Shannon. Next up for her was playing the title character in the TV movie Joan of Arc, which earned Sobieski both an Emmy nomination and Golden Globe nomination. An interesting aside is that while she is the youngest actress to ever play this famous historical character, she was also closest in age to the real Joan.

One of the most interesting roles for Sobieski was playing a young teen embarking in Tom Cruise’s sexual fantasies with him in Eyes Wide Shut. What makes it interesting is at the time the movie was shot, she wasn’t even sixteen. Somehow, though, she came out of the movie with a very close friendship with reclusive director Stanley Kubrick, and was heartbroken when he died shortly after filming completed.

There was no stopping Sobieski after this, as she starred in a succession of movies, starting with Here on Earth, then moving into My First Mister with Albert Brooks, as they developed a May through December friendship. She returned to the thriller genre with both Joy Ride and The Glass House, and also returned to serious biographical TV movies starring as Tosia Altman in Uprising, a movie that brought Sobieski back to her Polish roots and also a second Golden Globe nomination. She continued the Nazi theme, starring with John Cusack in Max, a movie about an art dealer who befriends a young Adolf Hitler. Her fluency in French landed her a starring role in the miniseries Liaisons Dangereuses, Les, alongside Catherine Deneuve, Rupert Everett, and Nastassja Kinski.

Sobieski bears such a striking resemblance to actress Helen Hunt that many have thought that she was Hunt’s younger sister. To play this fact up, the two appeared together on Celebrity Deathmatch. She shares her personal life with her Pomeranian she named after singer Nina Simone. Her oddest hobby is that she collects locks of hair from the stars she has appeared with in movies. The only one to refuse so far has been Tom Cruise. While she's still a young actress, it’s a sure bet that this collection is still just in the beginning stages.
