Lil Kim Bio

Lil' KimLil' Kim is an award-winning rapper known for her raunchy lyrics and frequent semi-nakedness, as well as, ironically, for her charity work.
Kimberly Denise Jones was born on July 11, 1975, in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, New York. Her parents divorced when she was nine years old, leaving her and her older brother, Christopher, in the care of their father, Linwood. The household was deeply unsettled and Lil' Kim ended up living on the streets after a fight in which she tried to stab her father. When not sleeping at friends' houses, she lived with a succession of drug-dealing boyfriends and worked as a prostitute. Her life turned around when she met rapper The Notorious B.I.G. (also known as Biggie Smalls) who took care of her and became her mentor.
Getting a day job in Bloomingdale's, Lil' Kim worked on her rapping and became a member of the group Junior M.A.F.I.A., signed to Biggie's label. The band had three successful singles (including one featuring Aaliyah) and an album, Conspiracy, which was certified gold. Unlike most other women in the industry, Lil' Kim wrote all her own music and lyrics. After a year with the band, she struck out on her own with the album Hard Core, which debuted at #2 on the charts. It included a duet with Puff Daddy, and the song "Not Tonight (Ladies Night)" in which Lil' Kim teamed up with Missy Elliot, Angie Martinez, Da Brat, and TLC's Left Eye.
In 1997, Lil' Kim received a serious blow when Biggie was murdered. Suffering from serious depression, she felt unable to continue with her creative work, but she still performed on Diddy's No Way Out Tour and launched her own business, Queen Bee Entertainment. She also started working as a model for Versace, Candies, Iceberg, Baby Phat, Old Navy, and (along with her friend Mary J Blige) MAC cosmetics. Lil' Kim appeared on the covers of magazines including Interview, Vibe, and The Source. Though she was frequently criticized in the press for her heavily sexualized image, she remained true to herself, and in 2000 she brought out her second solo album, The Notorious K.I.M. This was followed by a cover of Patti LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade," on which she performed with Christina Aguilera, Pink, and Mya, for the soundtrack of the Nicole Kidman movie Moulin Rouge.
Working on a hit soundtrack gave Lil' Kim an entry point into Hollywood. She had already enjoyed a small role in She's All That, with Freddy Prinze Jr, Rachel Leigh Cook, and Matthew Lillard, but now she has been able to get bigger roles in the likes of Juwanna Man, with Miguel A. Núñez Jr. and Vivica A. Fox, and Gang of Roses, with Monica Calhoun, Stacey Dash, and Bobby Brown. She played the lead in John Ridley's Those Who Walk in Darkness, and also embarked on a television career, with roles in Moesha, with Brandy Norwood and William Allen Young; DAG, with David Rasche; and American Dreams, with Tom Verica and Gail O Grady.
In 2003 Lil' Kim released her third solo album, La Bella Mafia, which was another huge success, followed by the single "Magic Stick" with 50 Cent. Her career was going well, but two years later she was convicted of conspiracy and perjury for her witness testimony about a shooting incident involving Capone-N-Noreaga and her rival Foxy Brown. Her sentence of one year's imprisonment at the Philadelphia Detention Center was heavily criticized, owing to the fact that Martha Stewart, sentenced for similar crimes at the same time, only got five months in a women's camp. Debbie Harry wrote a protest song about it, which she offered to fans for free. Lil' Kim made good use of her time inside, writing over two hundred songs and releasing the album The Naked Truth. Upon her release, she faced a further thirty days of house arrest but was welcomed by hundreds of supporters.
Lil' Kim runs the foundation Lil' Kim Cares, raising money for underprivileged families. She has also worked to raise funds to combat AIDS. YUDDY |
