Linda Evangelista Bio

Linda EvangelistaLinda Evangelista is one of the five original supermodels. She is known for her constantly changing appearance as well as for her charity work.
Linda Evangelista was born on May 10, 1965, in St. Catherine's, Ontario, Canada. Her Italian father worked for General Motors and her brother would later go on to do the same. By the age of twelve she knew she wanted to become a model, and she entered the Miss Teen Niagara beauty pageant. Though she was unsuccessful, this led to her discovery by a talent agency, and Evangelista later moved to New York City to sign up with Elite Model Management. As offers were slow to come in, she spent time in Paris developing her skills. Three years later Evangelista got her big break when she was asked to pose for Vogue.
The Vogue photoshoot launched a career that would develop rapidly. Linda became known as one of the five original supermodels, along with Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington, changing the way the industry was perceived during the course of the 1980s. Along with Campbell and Turlington, Evangelista used her success to campaign for better wages for models, gradually giving them real clout within the industry and coming to be known (with some humor) as the leader of the supermodels' union. She was also known for her consummate professionalism, which drew praise from the likes of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld.
Besides magazine work, Evangelista was successful in the world of advertising, working on campaigns for Alberta Ferretti, American Express, Anne Klein, Barney's, Bloomingdale's, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Chloé, Dolce & Gabbana, Donna Karan, Gianni Versace, Hermes, Perry Ellis, Ralph Lauren, Kenar, Jill Sander Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior cosmetics, and Jones New York. She also worked as an actress, with a cameo role alongside Julian Sands and Saffron Burrows in Mike Figgis' The Loss of Sexual Innocence, and television work including an appearance in Sex in the City, alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis. To add to her already impressive resume, Evangelista appeared in music videos with George Michael and in the fashion documentaries Unzipped and Catwalk.
In the late 80s, Evangelista took a big gamble by cutting off most of her hair and re-shaping it into a dramatic bob. This led to her being dropped from several major projects, but within months her dramatic look was being copied everywhere and she was back on magazine covers around the world. Her insistence on changing her appearance frequently without consulting anybody has led to her becoming known as "the Chameleon."
Between 1987 and 1993, Evangelista was married to Elite Paris executive Gerald Marie, but the marriage ended in divorce. She then became engaged to actor Kyle MacLachlan, but they separated in 1998. Other boyfriends have included Italian oil magnate Ugo Brachetti Peretti, Formula One driver Paolo Barilla, and French soccer player Fabien Barthez, by whom she became pregnant, unfortunately suffering a miscarriage. Having always wanted to have children, she is now pregnant again, by a New York architect. Her first pregnancy prompted her to give up her habit of cigar smoking and she now neither smokes nor drinks.
When not working as a model, Evangelista devotes her time to good causes, most notably working with Bryan Adams to raise funds to combat breast cancer, from which her grandmother suffered. She also campaigns to increase AIDS awareness. YUDDY |
