Luciano Pavarotti Bio

Luciano Pavarotti (Deceased)

Probably one of the most famous singers of all time, Luciano Pavarotti, was into his seventies when he died, and said farewell to his long and successful musical career. As an Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti was renowned for his musical work and abilities, not only in the world of opera, but in many other music genres as well.

Luciano Pavarotti was born on October 12, 1935, in Italy. He has been married twice and has four daughters all together—three with his first wife Adua and one, Alice, with his second wife Nicoletta Mantovani.

On April 29, 1961, when Luciano Pavarotti was twenty-five, he made his opera debut as Rodolfo in La Bohème in Reggio Emilia, a town in northern Italy. Four years later he made his American opera debut in Miami with Australian opera sensation Joan Sutherland. He was travelling on tour with Joan and the regular tenor was ill that night so Luciano, the understudy, took his place. Later, Luciano Pavarotti performed for the second time at La Scala—a famous opera house in Milan, Italy—with fellow tenor opera singer from Spain, Giacomo Aragall.

However, it was his performance at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 1972 of famous Italian opera composer Gaetano Donizetti’s La Fille Du Régiment that really turned Pavarotti into a legendary opera superstar in America. He hit nine high Cs—effortlessly—and received seventeen curtain calls at the show’s end.

Luciano Pavarotti went on to gain further acclaim and recognition through his many performances, concerts, and tours all over the world. He even went on to make various recordings of his music, and even television appearances and performances. In addition, Luciano Pavarotti acquired several Grammy Awards, as well as platinum and gold discs.

Further performances and titles that stand out include I Lombardi, opposite Italian soprano Renata Scotto in 1969; La Favorita, with Italian mezzosoprano Fiorenza Cossotto; and I Puritani, with Joan Sutherland.

Luciano Pavarotti established The Pavarotti International Voice Competition for young singers and held and managed worldwide competitions for several years. He celebrated the silver anniversary in a tour with the winners of the second competition to Modena, Genoa, and China, where he performed in the Great Hall of the People in front of an audience of 10,000.

And yet Pavarotti’s trademark success was still to come. In 1990 Luciano became renowned internationally for his rendition of opera composer Giacomo Puccini’s Nessun Dorma from Turandot, which became the theme song of the World Cup in Italy that year, and eventually, Pavarotti’s trademark song. He later performed with fellow tenors Plácido Domingo and José Carreras (Three Tenors) at the close of that World Cup. His recording from the event became the biggest-selling classical record ever. Subsequent Three Tenors concerts held for Football World Cups were recorded and surpassed sales of concerts by Elvis Presley and the Rolling Stones.

Another notable performance of Luciano Pavarotti’s was his performance with Vanessa Williams on Saturday Night Live on December 12, 1998—the first and only opera performance on the show. In addition, Luciano sang U2’s song Miss Sarajevo with band frontman Bono, and also performed with Barry White at a fundraiser in Italy in 2001.

Luciano Pavarotti received Kennedy Center Honors in 2001 and holds two Guinness World Records—one for 165 curtain calls and one for the best-selling classical album (Three Tenors). He had emergency surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his pancreas in July 2006 and spent months recovering and receiving ongoing cancer treatments. It was announced that his farewell tour was interrupted due to the cancer.

During 2007 Pavarotti's health deteriorated and in August of that year he was hospitalized in Italy and renewed announcements revealed tht he was undergoing tests for his pancreatic cancer. But September 5th 2007 brought the news that Luciano Pavarotti, one of the world's most beloved tenors, had died.
