Luis MiguelMexican pop-music performer Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri has been a popular singer in Latin America since the mid 1980s, but he didn’t make it big in the United States until 1991 when his album, Romance, became the first Spanish album to ever reach the Top 10 in a music store in Miami. He is also currently the best selling Spanish-language artist in the history of Bolivia, Mexico, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay.
Luis has kept much of his personal life private. He is known for rarely granting interviews and for refusing to answer questions concerning his personal life. Much of the details of his personal life are unclear and surrounded by a lot of speculation.
It is known for sure that he grew up in the Mexican state of Veracruz, making most people think he was born there as well. But it wasn’t until the early 1990s that it came out that he was born in Puerto Rico on April 19, 1970, during a brief stay with his parents on the island.
While Luis recognizes the place of his birth, he still considers himself Mexican. He was granted citizenship by the Mexican government in the early 1990s after it was uncovered that he was born in Puerto Rico.
For years it was thought that Luis’s parents were the late Spanish singer, Luisito Rey (born Luis Gallego Sánchez) and the Italian-born actress, Marcella Basteri. His mother left Luis and his two younger brothers, Sergio and Alejandro, sometime in 1987 when she mysteriously disappeared.
Later it came to light that Luis is supposedly the love child conceived in a brief affair his mother had with Gerald Spencer, cousin of Princess Diana, while she and her husband were traveling Europe. To date this has not been concretely proven.
Luis’s recording career began in 1981 when he recorded his first album, 1+1= 2 Enamorados (1+1 = 2 people in love). Two years later he began touring Latin American countries including Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, and Argentina.
In 1985 he won his first award at the Italian song contest, Sanremo Music Festival. The same year he won another award, the Antorcha de Plata (silver torch) award, at the Viña del Mar Music Festival in central Chile.
From 1984 to 1985 Luis briefly pursued an acting career and appeared in a couple of Latin movies, but he soon returned to music. By 1988 his popularity as a singer in Latin America reached dizzying heights.
In 1991 Luis’ album, Romance, brought him into the American limelight. By 1993 he had become the fourth Latin artist to ever sell out Madison Square Garden, and won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album. In 1994 Frank Sinatra personally invited Luis to join him on his Duets II album. That year Luis also performed in a nationally televised special honoring Sinatra, along with other stars such as Stevie Wonder and Natalie Cole.
Luis continued singing and ten years later he released Mexico en la Piel, an album that earned him two Grammy awards.
In 2006 Luis completed a thirty-show engagement from January 18 to February 27 in Mexico City that is said to be one of the most profitable indoor performances in the history of Mexico. It grossed $19.3 million and drew 267,528 fans.
Luis Miguel is currently dating Mexican soap opera actress Aracely Arámbula. The two are expecting their first child in December 2006. YUDDY |
