Luke went to the St. Mark’s school of Texas, the school Tommy Lee Jones also attended, and he became the track star of the school. To this day he holds school records for both the 400- and 800-meter runs. After high school, Luke attended Occidental College. He continued to excel in track and field, but hung up his sneakers after taking a drama class.
After college, Luke moved out to Hollywood along with his two older brothers to pursue a career in acting. Luke’s first role was in the short film Bottle Rocket in 1994. The brothers took the film to the Sundance Film Festival that year. At the festival, they were able to attract the attention of a director who was willing to turn it into a full-length film. The film was co-written between Owen Wilson and director, Wes Anderson. Three years later he was starring in his next role, Telling Lies in America (1997), a move that co-starred Calista Flockhart.
Wilson went on to star in three films the following year: Home Fries, Best Men, and Rushmore. The first two films co-starred Drew Barrymore and the two began dating, though the relationship ended in 1998. The third film, Rushmore, was once again co-written by his brother Owen Wilson and directed by Wes Anderson.
Wilson is also unofficially a part of the infamous "Frat Pack." The group includes several actors that co-star in each other’s projects and provide moral support at award shows. Other members of the Frat Pack include Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Steve Carell, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, and of course, Owen Wilson. The team of actors has worked on films like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy in 2004 and The Royal Tenenbaums in 2001. One of Wilson’s co-stars in the films was Gwyneth Paltrow, who he was dating at the time. In 2005 Luke teamed up again with his brothers Owen and Andrew for the film The Wendell Baker Story. His participation in the film included starring in, co-writing, and co-directing.
Even after Luke became a successful actor, he continued to live in his brother Owen’s home. Although Luke owned his own home, he felt overwhelmed at moving out on his own and the prospect of having to buy all new furniture. It took him over a year of owning his own home before he actually moved into it.
