Although Lyle is typically considered a country singer, he has also been known to push the boundaries of the genre. Some of his songs are known to have a blues, jazz, or soul influence to them. Lovett has won a total of four Grammys in his career. His most recent award was for Best Country Album in 1996 for The Road to Ensenada. Other albums to his credit include: And His Large Band (1989), Joshua Judges Ruth (1992), and I Love Everybody (1994).
Lyle has not limited himself to music throughout his career. He has also acted in quite a few films and has made several guest appearances on television shows. His first film, The Player, was released in 1992. He also starred in The Opposite of Sex, which co-starred Christina Ricci. He teamed up again with Christina Ricci in the Anjelica Huston directed film, Bastard out of Carolina in 1996. His most recent film was The New Guy in 2002. Lovett is also cast often in Robert Altman directed films; they have worked together for a total of five films. Some of their collaborations include: Ready to Wear (1995), Cookie’s Fortune (1999), and in Short Cuts (1993).
As far as television goes, he has guest starred on shows like, Mad About You and Dharma & Greg, starring Jenna Elfman and Thomas Gibson.
Lyle Lovett’s first marriage was to actress, Julia Roberts. The couple married in 1993. The marriage caused a very private Lyle to undergo public scrutiny by the media. The marriage collapsed less than two years later and the couple divorced in 1995. Lovett has dated April Kimble since 1999, though no wedding bells have chimed yet.
When not producing music or acting in films, Lovett prefers a quiet life on the farm in Texas. His quiet life was turned upside down in March of 2002 when he was rammed into a fence by a bull. He had to be pulled to safety by friends on his Uncle’s farm. The accident broke Lovett’s leg. The injury did not keep Lyle pent up for too long though. He made a complete recovery and six months later was touring again.
