M. Night Shyamalan BiographyIndian born film writer and director Manoj Nelliattu Shyamalan, known professionally as M. Night Shyamalan, is best known for directing the 1999 film The Sixth Sense, starring Bruce Willis. The film had a $40 million budget, and grossed over $600 million worldwide making it one of the twenty-five most commercially successful films through mid-2006.
Some of his film trademarks include the use of bright colors, especially red, to signify a clue or crucial item in the movie; shots of people’s reflections; fluttering curtains; surprise endings; and characters who are ordinary individuals with extraordinary abilities or events happening to them. Like director Alfred Hitchcock, Shyamalan is known for making cameo appearances in his films.
He was born on August 6, 1970, in Pondicherry, India, but only spent the first six weeks of his life there before his parents moved him to Penn Valley, an affluent Main Line Suburb in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went to the private Catholic grammar school, Waldron Academy, and then went to a private Episcopalian high school called The Episcopal Academy in Lower Merion. In 1992 Shyamalan graduated from New York’s University Tisch School of Arts in Manhattan.
Though Shyamalan’s father, Nelliattu C. Shyamalan, a physician, wanted his son to follow the family practice of medicine, his mother, also a doctor encouraged Shyamalan to follow his early desire to be a filmmaker. By the time he was seventeen, Shyamalan had already made forty-five home movies. Ever since directing the movie The Sixth Sense, he has included a scene from one of these childhood video on each of the DVD releases of his films.
Shyamalan directed and wrote his first film in 1992, a semi-autobiographical drama called Praying With Anger while still a student at NYU. The film was about an alienated, Americanized teenager of East Indian heritage who is sent back to where he discovers his roots and was created using money Shyamalan borrowed from family and friends. The movie was filmed in Chennai Madras, and is the only film he has ever shot outside of Pennsylvania.
In 1995 he wrote and directed his second movie Wide Awake, which featured his parents as the film’s associated producers. The movie, released in 1998, was filmed in a school Shyamalan attended as a child. It also earned him a 1999 Young Artist Award nomination for Best Drama, even though it grossed only $305,704 in the theaters.
In 1999 he wrote the screenplay for Stuart Little, which starred Michael J Fox, Geena Davis, Hugh Laurie, Jonathan Lipnicki, and Nathan Lane
It is his next series of films, which he both wrote and directed that brought him international notoriety. The chilling thriller The Sixth Sense in 1999 starred Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, Toni Collette, and Donnie Wahlberg.
Shyamalan followed this up with Unbreakable in 2000, also starring Bruce Willis, along with Samuel L Jackson and Robin Wright Penn. Signs in 2002 took the crop circle theory to frightening heights with Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, and Rory Culkin; while The Village in 2004 brought the fear of a sheltered community to light starring Bryce Dallas Howard (daughter of Ron Howard), Joaquin Phoenix , Sigourney Weaver, Adrian Brody, William Hurt, and Brendan Gleeson. Lady of the Water in 2006 was not so much a commercial success as his earlier films. He also directed and starred in an American Express commercial that debuted during the 2006 Oscars.
Shyamalan has said on ABC’s The View that his next project is a science fiction film that will be the darkest project he has done to date.
Shyamalan lives in Wayne, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Indian psychologist Bhavna Vaswani, whom he met at NYU. The two married in 1993 and have two daughters.YUDDY |
