Mallika Sherawat Biography
Indian beauty Mallika Sherawat is an increasingly popular star in the Bollywood film industry. While a lot of her attention is gained by her open demeanor with the media, she also shot into the limelight with films such as Murder and Guru.
Reema Lamba, known popularly as Mallika Sherawat, was born October 24, 1981 in Karnal, Haryana, India. As with many actresses, there is some dissension about her exact date of birth. In fact, alternate sources put her year of birth as early as 1976.
In terms of education, Sherawat has proved she’s more than just a pretty face, earning a degree from Miranda House, Delhi University in Indian philosophy.
Before she ever entered the entertainment industry, Sherawat worked as a flight attendant. While working this job, Sherawat married pilot Karan Singh Gill. Although little is known about this marriage, she has confirmed that it happened, and she has also confirmed that it didn’t last long before it ended in divorce.
Transitioning into film, a move which caused a lot of consternation within her family, she made her onscreen debut in 2002 with Jeena Sirf Merre Liye. She shared the screen with Tusshar Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Kader Kahn.
The following year, she appeared in the poorly received Khwahish. Although that film wasn’t a runaway success, she had more luck in 2004 when she starred in Murder. Co-starring Ashmit Patel, Emraan Hashmi, and Kashmira Shah, it was Sherawat who walked away with a Zee Cine Award nomination for Best Actress.
Bolstered by the success of this film, Sherawat began expressing her opinions more publicly. Her clothing coupled with these rather forward public statements quickly earned her the status of a sex symbol throughout India.
Back on the film front, she took another starring role in 2004. This time around, it was in another tepidly received project—Kis Kis Ki Kismat with Kurush Deboo.
In 2005, she made headlines again when she was promoting her film San Wa (sometimes billed as The Myth). The movie was a vehicle for Jackie Chan and Jason Chong, but Sherawat stole the media’s attention for her revealing outfits worn in the film.
She continued appearing in films, but it wasn’t until 2006 that those films really began garnering attention. The Amitabh Bachchan film Darna Zaroori Hai earned Sherawat some praise, but it was her following film that really solidified her as an actress.
The romantic comedy was entitled Pyaar Ke Side Effects, and it also featured Rahul Bose as lead. It raked in an impressive amount of money at the box office, and Sherawat was enjoying more commercial success than she had ever had.
Similarly, her 2007 project Guru garnered a lot of positive critical attention. This was bolstered by the appearance of Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan in the film.
Her most recent project was 2008’s Dasavatharam.
She is currently filming two projects with two others in various stages of production.
