Marc Anthony began his career in his late teens and early twenties, working as a background vocalist and songwriter for various pop and dance groups such as the Latin Rascals and Menudo. Marc’s first album release was Rebel in 1988. The album, which included all original songs in the freestyle music genre (also known as Latin hip hop), was debuted with Blue Dog Records.
After the release of Rebel, Marc Anthony went on to songwrite, produce, sing with, and otherwise work for a number of prominent singers and artists in the freestyle music world, such as Sa-Fire, Ann-Marie, Little Louie Vega, Todd Terry, Chrissy I-eece, Edmond, and others. He released When the Night is Over in 1991 and the follow-up Ride On the Rhythm the next year. After this success Anthony decided to change his musical style from freestyle to salsa and other Spanish-inspired music. This transformation led to the release of his Spanish-language album debut in 1994, Otra Nota, featuring the hit song "Hasta que te concoi."
Into the mid-1990s, Marc Anthony released further Spanish music and language albums and toured all over the Americas, establishing him as one of the hottest new salsa superstars around. In 1995, he released Todo a Su Tiempo, which garnered him a Grammy nomination. Contra La Corriente, released two years later, won the artist a Grammy in 1999 for Best Tropical Latin Performance. Shortly thereafter, Anthony appeared in Paul Simon’s stage musical The Capeman. Then, the popular artist recorded a duet entitled "No Me Ames," with future wife Jennifer Lopez on her album On the 6.
Then, in 1999, Marc Anthony released a self-titled English-language album in an attempt to cross over into the English-speaking pop music market like fellow musicians Jennifer and Ricky Martin. His efforts were met with mixed results. However, the album did produce several big hits like "I Need to Know, "When I Dream at Night" and "You Sang to Me"—the last of which was featured in the 1999 comedy-romance Runaway Bride, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Marc decided to go back to Spanish salsa, and his 2001 release Libre went certified gold.
Marc Anthony released a total of twelve albums between 1988 and 2006. He has also played a few roles in several films, such as Hackers in 1995, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie; 1996’s Big Night, in which he starred alongside Tony Shalhoub and Stanley Tucci; Martin Scorsese’s Bringing Out the Dead in 1999, with Nicolas Cage, Patricia Arquette, and John Goodman; and Man on Fire in 2004, with Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning.
Marc Anthony married Jennifer Lopez on June 5, 2004, less than a week after his divorce was made official in the Dominican Republic to former wife (and former Miss Universe) of four years, Dayanara Torres. Marc has two children with Dayanara, Cristian, born in 2001; and Ryan, born in 2003. He also has a daughter, Arianna, with his ex-girlfriend, a New York police officer.
