Marg HelgenbergerMarg Helgenberger, who plays tough Catherine Willows in the forensic drama CSI, prefers to act in roles that are either cops or criminals. She’s been quoted as saying, "I gravitate toward edgier material because it suits my nature." Marg was born Mary Marg Helgenberger on November 16, 1958, in Fremont, Nebraska to Roman Catholic parents. She shortened her name when she started working as a weather girl on a local news station. The news producer thought her name was too long and made her change it to Margi McCarty. Marg later decided to go by her middle name.
Helgenberger's big break into acting came while she was studying at Northwestern University. A scout for the soap opera Ryan’s Hope saw her performance as Kate in the university’s 1981 production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. She was offered the role of Siobhan Ryan Novak, and made her debut on the soap in March of 1982, staying with the show until 1986.
Marg met her future husband Alan Rosenberg in 1984 while filming Ryan’s Hope. (Alan later appeared in the successful CBS show The Guardian from 2001 to 2004.) The two eloped in 1989 and had a son, Hugh Howard Rosenberg, in 1990. The son is named after Marg’s father, Hugh Helgenberger, who died in 1986 from multiple sclerosis.
Her next acting role was on the ABC show China Beach, where she played a heroin-addicted prostitute. For her portrayal of this character she won the Best Supporting Actress trophy in 1988, 1989, and 1990 from the Viewers for Quality Television Awards. She also received an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy in 1990.
Television shows Marg has appeared in include Matlock, starring Andy Griffith; Mike Judge's King of the Hill; Frasier, with Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce; Fallen Angels, with Tom Hanks; and a recurring role in 1996’s ER, with Anthony Edwards, George Clooney, and Noah Wyle.
During the 1990s, Marg was involved in several small-time movies like Distant Cousins and Blind Vengeance.
In 1989, Marg appeared briefly in the Steven Spielberg movie Always. In 1995, she acted in the blockbuster Bad Boys, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The same year she appeared as Dr Laura Bake in the science fiction action movie Species. She also appeared in the 1998 sequel. In 1997, Marg co-starred with Steven Seagal in Fire Down Below.
Marg played the role of Donna Jensen, a woman whose cancer-stricken family helps Erin Brockovich uncover important evidence, in the Oscar winning 2000 film Erin Brockovich, with Julia Roberts. Her performance in the movie caught the attention of CBS executives who requested that Marg audition for the role of Catherine Willows on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Marg and her husband are passionate about fighting breast cancer because her mother is a 24-year survivor of the disease. Every year they host the Marg and Alan’s Celebrity Weekend in Omaha to fight breast cancer. They have done so since 1997. YUDDY |
