Margaret Cho Bio

Margaret Cho

Margaret Cho is a well-known Korean American comedienne, actress, and fashion designer who found herself in the limelight after several hugely successful one-woman comedy shows.

Cho was born as Moran Cho on December 5, 1968, in San Francisco, California. Only three days after her birth, her father was deported because he was unable to obtain a work permit. Her mother was then forced to send Cho to Korea to live with her father and grandparents for a while because she was unable to provide for her on her own.

In high school, Cho was no honors student. In fact, she was kicked out of Lowell High School because her GPA had dropped to a 0.60. As a last resort she was accepted into McAteer High School for the Performing Arts.

By the age of sixteen, Cho had begun to develop her stand up comedy routine and began touring comedy clubs with fellow comedienne Janeane Garofalo. At this time she developed a habit for smoking, which she blames on Janeane’s influence.

In 1994, Cho landed a starring role on the television sitcom, All-American Girl, which was the first show to feature an entirely Asian American cast. Although Cho was originally hired on to play essentially herself, she was then pressured into losing weight and acting more "Asian." This resulted in Cho losing thirty pounds in two weeks. After the filming of the first episode her kidneys collapsed and she had to be hospitalized. Several episodes later, she was asked to act less "Asian." The show was then cancelled after the first season.

Cho did not become widely recognized as a comedienne until 2000, on her I’m the One That I Want tour. The show was then filmed and became one of the highest grossing films in history in proportion to the number of prints. She then followed up with her 2002 tour, Notorious C.H.O.

Cho continues to perform as a comedienne, but has also expanded her career to include her website, http://www.margaretcho.com, where she posts daily blogs that offer commentary on her anti-Bush sentiments. Her outspoken opinions have proven to be quite controversial among conservatives.

Cho has also released her own clothing line in 2002 with the help of friend and designer Ava Stander, called High Class Cho. The line did not last, however, and was dropped due to lack of interest. In 2006 she has resumed her fashion efforts by selling belly dancing belts through her website.

In the past, Cho has had several high profile relationships with celebrities like Chris Isaak, Garrett Wang, and Quentin Tarantino. In 2003, she married Al Ridenour, an artist responsible for creating the organization, Art is Bleeding. She has said the marriage is not traditional in the sense that they are not committed to one another.

Cho is an advocate for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender rights. She has been openly bisexual for years and is also a fan of the adult film actor Jeff Stryker.
