Mario LopezAlthough he is probably best known as the hunky high school wrestling star in the hit series Saved by the Bell, Lopez has also enjoyed a career as a host for several reality series. His stint as a television and screen actor has spanned over two decades, and although he may not be one of Hollywood’s A-listers, this is still an impressive accomplishment for the thirty-something Lopez. Mario Lopez was born on October 10, 1973, in San Diego, California. His passion for acting led to him being cast as a drummer and dancer on Kids Incorporated. The show revolved around a group of youths who performed in a rock group. The series featured guest stars such as Billy Blanks, David Hasselhoff, Brittany Murphy, and Scott Wolf, and covered the hits songs of artists and groups of the time. Other co-stars on the show during Lopez’s 1984 to 1986 stint on the show included the Black Eye Peas’ Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson and the 1988 "Toy Soldiers" one-hit-wonder Martika.
After his two year stint on the series, Lopez made small appearances on the TV show The Golden Girls, starring Estelle Getty, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White, and also had a small part in the 1988 film Colors, starring Sean Penn.
One short year later, Lopez would begin his role as the athletic AC Slater, the army brat who eventually becomes the best friend of Zack Morris and develops a love interest in the feminist Jessie Spano, on Save by the Bell. Lasting almost ninety episodes, the teen sitcom starred Mark Paul Gosselaar, Dustin Diamond, Tiffani Thiessen, and Elizabeth Berkly. The success of the series led to two movies, as well as several spin-offs. Mario stayed with the show during its entirety. He established himself as a teen heartthrob and, although the series ended in 1993, he will probably always be synonymous with the character of AC Slater.
Since the end of Saved by the Bell, Lopez has worked steadily in television, serving as a host for a variety of series such as Pet Star, Masters of the Maze, Name Your Adventure, and ESPN Hollywood. He also appeared in the films Big Brother Trouble and King Rikki.
For Lopez, 2006 appears to be a great year. He joined the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful from March to July, and also guest-starred on the popular series Nip/Tuck. In September, he also began appearing on the ABC hit Dancing With the Stars. Paired with the professional Karina Smirnoff, Lopez made a strong start on the program, which isn’t surprising considering that, aside from acting, dancing is his greatest passion. Only time will tell whether the resulting exposure from his recent appearances will signal a resurgence in popularity for the still-young star.
In his personal life, Lopez counts Saved by the Bell co-star Mark Paul Gosseleaar and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria among his close friends. Actress and model Ali Landry was Lopez’s long-time companion, and they married in 2004. However, the marriage was annulled just two weeks later, supposedly due to Mario’s infidelity. Rumors have been swirling about a love connection between Mario and his dancing co-star Karina Smirnoff, but these rumors have not been confirmed by either Lopez or Smirnoff. YUDDY |
