Marley Shelton Bio

Marley Shelton

Heating up the screen for the past decade, American actress Marley Shelton is most known for her work on the films Sugar & Spice, Bubble Boy, and most recently, Sin City.

Marley Eve Shelton was born April 12, 1974 in Los Angeles, California. Her mother is singer and teacher Carol Stromme, and her father is Christopher Shelton, a television producer and director of commercials. One of four daughters, Shelton was raised just outside of Los Angles in Eagle Rock. She subsequently attended Eagle Rock High School, where she was the typical high school beauty, cheering on the varsity squad and voted Prom Queen.

She began pursuing her acting career in 1991 when she appeared in a bit part opposite Danny Glover, Kevin Kline, Steve Martin, and Mary Louise Parker in the crime drama Grand Canyon. She bounced around television for the next two years before landing a role in the family comedy The Sandlot with Denis Leary, Karen Allen, and James Earl Jones.

When shooting on this film wrapped, Shelton, like so many young actresses, appeared in a multitude of films for many years on end. The roles, however, were generally bit parts, and the films themselves were usually non-commercial.

Her entry into the commercial world of film came most notably in 1998 with Pleasantville starring Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, William H Macy, Joan Allen, and Jeff Daniels. It continued with romantic comedies like Never Been Kissed starring Drew Barrymore and Michael Vartan.

With these films, Shelton was a somewhat familiar face. But her breakout year was, without a doubt, 2001. She appeared in three successful films in a row: Sugar & Spice with Marla Sokoloff and Mena Suvari, Valentine with Denise Richards, Katherine Heigl, and David Boreanaz, and Bubble Boy with Jake Gyllenhaal and Swoosie Kurtz.

Her next big gig came in 2003 when she appeared in the fun, bubbly comedy Uptown Girls. The film was also a springboard for stars Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning.

Shelton’s career received an additional boost when she was cast by Robert Rodriguez in his Frank Miller adaptation of Sin City. One among a laundry list of stars, Shelton appeared with Jessica Alba, Alexis Bledel, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Bruce Willis, and many more.

Working with both Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, Shelton also received a role in their co-directed film Grindhouse. Once again working with a large ensemble cast, the film featured Josh Brolin, Nicolas Cage, Jordan Ladd, Rose McGowan, and Kurt Russell.

Most recently, she was seen in Amir Mann’s The Fifth Patient. She is also in post-production for Our Lady of Victory, which is set to star Carla Gugino and Ellen Burstyn.

In her personal life, Shelton married Beau Flynn in July of 2001. A Hollywood couple, Flynn is a producer known for his work on films such as The House of Yes.
