Marlo Thomas Bio
Marlo Thomas

Many of us know her best from That Girl and as Rachel's mom on Friends, but the truth is Marlo Thomas carries many other identities as well. She is the daughter of Danny Thomas, wife of talk show host Phil Donahue, producer, and philanthropist.

Born as Margaret Julia Thomas on November 21, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, to comedian Danny Thomas and his wife Rose Marie Mantell, she was called Margie. She has a brother, Tony Thomas, a producer of television shows such as The Golden Girls and Blossom, and the movie Dead Poets Society. Her sister, Terre Thomas, had roles on both her father's and brother's television shows.

Danny Thomas did not want his daughter to pursue acting, at least not right away, and he encouraged her to finish college before beginning an acting career. She did so after finishing Beverly Hills High School, earning a teaching degree from the University of Southern California. As she entered the world of acting, appearing in a few episodes of established television series such as The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis and 77 Sunset Strip, she then played Joey's sister on The Joey Bishop Show. When her turn on this show ended, she returned to guest star spots on shows, appearing on Bonanza, McHale's Navy, and The Donna Reed Show.

Having firmly established herself as a separate entity away from her father, Thomas became the star of her own series, That Girl, also starring Ted Bessell as her boyfriend. Thomas starred in a role she knew well at this point, as a young actress trying to make it in New York City. She earned many Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe award for the role of Ann Marie.

One of Thomas's first projects after That Girl was in the television special Free to Be ... You & Me. Also featuring appearances and voices of Alan Alda, Mel Brooks, and Michael Jackson, the show was designed to empower children to realize they could be anything or do anything they wanted. Free to Be ... You & Me features short stories, poem, and songs, and came from an idea of Thomas's to teach life lessons to her niece. The show earned her two Emmys.

Thomas then worked to establish herself as a dramatic actress, trying to erase her That Girl image. She starred in It Happened One Christmas, an updated version of the James Stewart classic, It's a Wonderful Life, although in this television movie, Thomas was the female version of Stewart's character. Orson Welles and Chloris Leachman starred as well. Thomas then won an Emmy Award for her work on Nobody's Child, also starring Ray Baker and Kathy Baker. After a few more films and some guest spots on television series such as Roseanne and Frasier, Thomas played Jennifer Aniston's mother on Friends in a reoccurring role.

Performing isn't Thomas's only talent, and she has also produced many television projects, starting with occasionally filling in for the role of producer on That Girl. She went on to produce Free to Be ... You & Me and It Happened One Christmas, as well as Leap of Faith starring Anne Archer and Sam Neill and Taken Away with Valerie Bertinelli. She also appeared as the host on Our Heroes, Ourselves, a Lifetime television special celebrating women leading extraordinary lives.

In her private life, Thomas married talk show host Phil Donahue in 1980, and has done extensive philanthropic work for St. Jude Children's Hospital, a tradition her father had started years earlier. The organization helps children with severe illnesses.
