Martin Scorsese
“Are you talking to me? Are you…talking to me?” These words became instantly immortal in 1976 when the hit Taxi Driver was first released, directed by New York born Martin Scorsese. The rest of Mr. Scorsese’s career seemed to follow suit. Practically every one of his films found itself revered in the annals of movie history. However, it wasn’t immediately obvious that Scorsese was bound for stardom. Born in Queens, New York on November 17, 1942, Scorsese seriously considered entering the priesthood before eventually focusing his talents and effort on film. But where this religious training applies to his personal life, I’m not entirely clear. Scorsese has been married five times, most notably to Isabella Rossellini from 1979-1983. Scorsese has three children, although none with the lovely, Italian born Rossellini (known for her roles in Fearless (1993) and Big Night (1996), and for being Ingrid Bergman’s daughter, of Casablanca fame).
Yet Scorsese proves time and time again that he is capable of maintaining a meaningful and lasting relationship. It just happens to be a professional relationship, and it just happens to be with actors. Yes, it appears that Scorsese’s working relationships are infinitely more solid than his marital ties. Scorsese is one of those directors with a tendency to cast and recast actors. He consistently works with Harvey Keitel, Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro.
De Niro and Scorsese in particular have shared an illustrious career. First cast in Mean Streets (1973), De Niro went on to star in Taxi Driver (1976), New York, New York (1977), Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1983), Goodfellas (1990), Cape Fear (1991) and Casino (1995)—all Scorsese productions. Perhaps some of Scorsese’s longevity can be attributed to this keen eye for talent. Scorsese knew he had a rare talent in De Niro, and he utilized that to jettison both De Niro and himself into superstardom. After all, a director must certainly have something special to enjoy a career that spans over 40 successful years. It’s little wonder then that the American Film Institute awarded Scorsese the Life Achievement Award on February 20, 1997. And in true Scorsese form, he denied any implication of his career’s end by going on to direct Bringing Out the Dead (starring Nicolas Cage), Gangs of New York (starring Leonardo DiCaprio) and of course The Aviator, earning him a nomination for Achievement in Directing. At the Academy Awards, Scorsese lost out to Clint Eastwood for his boxing drama Million Dollar Baby. However, this loss did not really serve as a shock to followers of Scorsese’s career. Despite multiple nominations in directing, it seemed Scorsese would never take home a statuette. That is until 2007, when he finally won Best Director for The Departed, starring Leondardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and Jack Nicholson. Scorsese is one of the definitive directors of our time. Scorsese’s films are highly stylized and distinctive, utilizing techniques like the slow motion effect at a time when, quite simply, nobody was doing that. These innovative shots paved the way for up-and-coming directors like Quentin Tarantino, who could build off of Scorsese’s example and infuse their own unique talent and
vibrancy into their films. And Scorsese doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. He still attracts the biggest stars, directs the grandest films and continually redefines what it means to be a director. |
