Masi Oka
Before spending his time as a programmer toying around with the space-time continuum on Heroes, Masi (full name: Masayori) Oka worked as a digital effects artist, guest starred in a plethora of popular TV series, and appeared in various well-known films.
Oka was born in Tokyo, Japan, on December 27, 1974. He moved from Tokyo to L.A. when he was six, and in 1997, graduated from Brown University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Mathematics.
Oka is currently employed as a programmer at George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic, which has allowed him to work on many high-profile and top-grossing Blockbuster hits in Hollywood, most notably Star Wars Episodes I (1999), II (2002), and III (2005); The Perfect Storm (2000), starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Diane Lane; Hulk (2003), with Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly; Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger; War of the Worlds (2005), with Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning; and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), which featured Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley.
As an actor, Oka has guest starred in notable television series within the last six years, such as Dharma & Greg, starring Jenna Elfman and Thomas Gibson; Gilmore Girls, with leading mother-daughter duo Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel; Yes, Dear, starring Anthony Clark, Jean Louisa Kelly, Mike O’Malley, and Liza Snyder; Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, with Melissa Joan Hart as the title role; She Spies; Scrubs, with Zach Braff in the lead role; All of Us; Ashton Kutcher’s Punk’d; Reba; and Without a Trace.
But Oka quickly garnered international recognition on the new and critically acclaimed show Heroes, alongside Hayden Panettiere, Ali Larter, Milo Ventimiglia, Greg Grunberg, and many others.
He also appeared in several films, such as 2002’s Austin Powers in Goldmember with Mike Myers, Beyonce Knowles, and Seth Green, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003), starring Reese Witherspoon, Sally Field, and Luke Wilson, and Along Came Polly (2004), starring Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller.
Oka is currently working on his new film, Balls of Fury, set to release in 2007. The Japanese-American actor and effects artist also speaks Spanish fluently in addition to Japanese and English. |
