Matt Leblanc Bio
Matt LeBlanc

He is beloved and renowned for the hilarious, not-so-bright womanizer with the heart of gold character of Joey Tribbiani for 12 years—10 on the huge hit T.V. sitcom Friends and two seasons on Joey, the show’s spinoff.

Matt LeBlanc, born Matthew Steven LeBlanc on July 25, 1967 in Newton, Massachusetts, is an American actor with several Emmy nominations under his belt. Matt is the son of Paul LeBlanc and Pat Grossman and a half-brother to Justin.

LeBlanc is of mixed heritage—Irish, Dutch, English, French and Italian—although his last name is French (meaning “The White”). He actually speaks French fluently, which is interesting, as in a season 10 episode of Friends (“The One Where Joey Speaks French”), Joey tries, very unsuccessfully and hilariously, to learn French under Phoebe’s coaching and actually believes he is speaking the language correctly.

Matt LeBlanc graduated in 1985 from Newton North High School and worked as a photography model before his breakthrough into acting. Matt was featured on the 1991 cover of Spartacus International Gay Guide, although he has never claimed any homosexual orientation. He also played the love interest of Canadian rocker Alanis Morissette in her Walk Away music video.

LeBlanc’s breakthrough role in acting came in 1994 when he was cast as Joey Tribbiani for the debut of the hit comedy series Friends alongside relatively unknown-at-the-time actors Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer, and actresses Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow. However, Matt actually had an acting life before that. He played various roles in T.V. shows, including Kelly Bundy’s boyfriend in the sitcom Married…with Children in the early 1990s. LeBlanc also played roles in the show’s short-lived spinoffs Top of the Heap and Vinnie and Bobby as Vinnie Verducci. He also acted in the relatively unsuccessful film The Killing Box in 1993, which also featured Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Sheen, and David Arquette.

More recent and more successful films to LeBlanc’s credit include Lost in Space (1998) (with William Hurt, Mimi Rogers, Heather Graham, Lacey Chabert, Jack Johnson, and Gary Oldman), Charlie’s Angels (2000), and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003), which starred Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu. Matt played Lucy’s character’s boyfriend.

NBC decided not to renew the contract for Joey and his show only lasted for two seasons, never becoming the hit the company hoped it would be. The show also starred Drea de Matteo, Paulo Costanzo, Andrea Anders, and Jennifer Coolidge.

LeBlanc has left his wife of three years, Melissa McKnight, 41. The two officially divorced in March 2006 for “irreconcilable differences.” The couple has a little girl, Marina Pearl, born February 8, 2004 who has cortical dysplasia, a rare brain disorder. Now, LeBlanc is reportedly seeing his Joey co-star, Andrea Anders.
