Matthew Fox
Although he’s accumulated quite a fan following as Dr Shephard on Lost, the hit television drama about plane crash survivors on a remote island, this sexy television star has been around in show business for quite awhile.
As a former model who recently turned the big 4-0, Matthew Fox first garnered international fame as big brother/father figure Charlie Salinger on the family/teen drama Party of Five, which was a big hit in the mid to late-1990s, alongside Neve Campbell, Scott Wolf, and Lacey Chabert.
Fox was born in Wyoming and grew up with his family (parents Loretta and Francis Fox and two brothers) on their horse ranch in Crowheart.
After attending Deerfield Academy and graduating from Columbia University (where he played for the Columbia Lions football team) in 1988, Fox attended New York’s School for Film and Television and started out with the Atlantic Theater Company., which trained notable actors such as Jessica Alba, Felicity Huffman, Peter Facinelli, Skeet Ulrich, and more.
Before he got into modeling, Fox attempted a career on Wall Street trading stocks, but then turned it down, realizing he “didn’t have what it takes.” His girlfriend-at-the-time’s mother, a modeling agent, spurred him on to a modeling career.
He made his acting debut in an episode of Wings, a popular ‘90s T.V. series starring Timothy Daly, Steven Weber, Crystal Bernard, David Schramm, and Thomas Haden Church . Fox went on to take the lead role in Freshman Dorm, a TV series that only lasted five episodes in 1992, and take guest and supporting roles before he landed his big-screen debut on My Boyfriend’s Back in 1993, which starred Andrew Lowery, Traci Lind, Danny Zorn, Edward Herrmann, and Mary Beth Hurt.
However, his breakthrough role came when he was cast as the eldest of five siblings, Charlie, left to fend for themselves when their parents died in a car crash in Party of Five in 1994. The show lasted until 2000 and was considered successful, propelling the careers of many of his co-stars—Neve Campbell and Jennifer Love Hewitt, in particular.
Fox is currently busy with his relatively new (and popular) show, Lost, which debuted in September 2004, and also stars Naveen Andrews, Jorge Garcia, Josh Holloway, Daniel Dae Kim, Yoon-jin Kim, Evangeline Lilly, Dominic Monaghan, Terry O’Quinn, and Emilie de Ravin. Fox plays the calm, cool, and collected Dr Jack Shephard, for which he won the 2005 Satellite Award, and also shared with the cast of Lost the 2006 Screen Actors Guild Award for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.”
Fox has been married since 1992 to Margherita Ronchi, with whom he has two children. |
