Mc Lyte Bio
MC Lyte

Pioneer rapper MC Lyte was born Lana Michele Moorer on October 11, 1971 in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in Brooklyn, MC began writing rhymes at 12 years old. Her first single, I Cram to Understand U (Sam) dealt with the subject of relationships and crack addiction, and landed MC a contract with the label First Priority.

MC’s debut album, Lyte As a Rock, was released in 1988, and she followed up with Eyes on This one year later. In 1991, MC released Act Like You Know, a softer, more soulful album. Two years later, she released Ain't No Other. The album included the Grammy-nominated single Ruffneck, which also became the first gold single ever released by a female rap artist.

MC’s accomplishments were not only groundbreaking for female rappers, paving the way for contemporaries such as Queen Latifah and Missy Elliot; but they were also groundbreaking for the rap genre as a whole. MC became the first rapper ever to perform in Carnegie Hall as well as on the popular late-night talk show, Arsenio Hall. She is also first rapper to tour for the USO – she has entertained troops stationed in Italy, Greece, Sicily, and Sardinia.

During the mid-'90s, MC Lyte switched to a new label called Elektra/Asylum. The label released such albums as Bad As I Wanna B (1996), featuring a duet with Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott on the song Cold Rock a Party. That same year, MC received a Soul Train Lady of Soul Music Award for Best R&B/Soul or Rap Music Video for her Keep On, Keepin' On collaboration with Xscape. In 1998, MC released Seven & Seven, which included more collaboration with Missy Elliott.

MC Lyte has also tried her hand at acting on such TV shows as Moesha (starring Brandy), In the House (with notables Debbie Allen,  LL Cool J, and Kim Wayans), and crime drama New York Undercover (also featuring Ice T, Naomi Campbell, & Edie Falco)with Lee Wong, Marisa Ryan, Jose Perez & Frank Pellegrino). She has also performed and co-written the theme songs for such shows as Fox’s Dark Angel and BET’s Holla.

MC also lends her voice to support various charitable endeavors, including anti-violence campaigns, Rock the Vote, and AIDS benefits. In December 2004 she was inducted as an honorary member into Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., a non-profit organization which aims to enhance the quality of life within the community.

In 2001, MC released her 16-track career overview The Very Best of MC Lyte, on Rhino Records. Two years later, MC made a comeback with the album Da Undaground Heat, Vol. 1, recorded at Jamie Foxx's Foxx Hole Studios. The album received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance - Female for Ride Wit Me, and features a comedic intro by Academy award-winning actor Jamie Foxx.

In 2005, MC’s single Wonder Years was leaked onto the internet and met with positive reviews. Her latest album, Back to the Future (2006) includes tracks produced by DJ Premier, Just Blaze, Audio Two, King of Chill, and Kay G.

In February 2006, MC donated items including her diary, turntable, and vinyl records to the Smithsonian Institution as part of a collection that commemorates the history of Bronx musicians. She is also currently working on putting out a line of home decor, called The Lana Moorer Collection.
