There was a time when Meg Ryan was America’s sweetheart, the queen of the romantic comedy. But because her personal life didn’t match up with the happy endings in so many of her movies, most of America seemed to drop this talented actress. She’s been working hard to gain the respect from her fans and of the movie industry since.
Meg Ryan was born Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra on November 19, 1961 in Fairfield, Connecticut. The daughter of Harry and Susan Hyra, who later divorced, she majored in journalism at New York University. While in college she acted in commercials to make extra money and dropped out of school after she decided to become an actress.
In 1981 Meg Ryan got her first break in the film Rich and Famous with Candice Bergen and Jacqueline Bisset. From 1982 to 1984 she was on the soap As The World Turns. It was in the 1986 film Top Gun, however, that people began to notice the actress. Ryan’s small but memorable role as Anthony Edwards’ wife gained her attention from many. She began a relationship with Edwards and the two lived together for a year.
In 1987 Ryan starred in the movie Innerspace with Martin Short and Dennis Quaid. The following year she starred with in the murder mystery D.O.A. again with Quaid. The two began a relationship and married in 1991 after Ryan convinced him to give up drugs and alcohol. In April of 1992 their only child, Jack Henry, was born.
Up until this point Meg Ryan was a recognizable actress, but in 1999 she made a movie that made her one of Hollywood’s most sought after actresses. She starred with Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally, considered one of the best romantic comedies of all time. The following year she teamed up with Tom Hanks in the first of three romantic comedies the two made together, Joe Verses the Volcano. Although that movie didn’t do too well, their 1993 movie Sleepless in Seattle was a huge hit and Meg Ryan became America’s sweetheart.
Throughout the 1990’s Ryan starred in many romantic comedies including I.Q. (1994) with Tim Robbins and Walter Matthau, French Kiss (1995) with Kevin Kline, Addicted to Love (1997) with Matthew Broderick, and You’ve Got Mail (1998), her third film with Hanks. Ryan also took a stab at more dramatic roles in movies such When a Man Loves a Woman (1994) and Courage Under Fire (1996) with Denzel Washington.
Her success came to a swift standstill, however, in 2000 when she was filming the film Proof of Life with Russell Crowe. Ryan and husband, Dennis Quaid, announced they were divorcing and rumors began to swell that Meg Ryan was having an affair with her co-star. America’s sweetheart lost her title and she has had trouble gaining the public’s interest since. Both the Ryan and Quaid said the marriage did not break up because of her relationship with Crowe, but her image was tarnished.
Ryan’s relationship with Crowe did not last long. Since her divorce she has been romantically linked with actors John Cusack, Breckin Myer and Craig Bierko.
Of the handful of films she has made since only one (Kate and Leopold (2001) with Hugh Jackman) has had any success. Ryan has not released a film since 2004, choosing to distance her character from the limelight while she adopted a girl from China named Daisy True.
In 2006 Ryan returned to movies, filming the yet to be released movie In The Land of Women with Adam Brody. |
