Mekhi Phifer
In 1995 an unknown actor with only two minor roles under his belt answered an open audition call for Spike Lee’s latest movie Clockers and won the role. The actor was Mekhi Phifer. He received critical acclaim for his role as Strike, a drug dealer who gets involved with a murder cover-up.
Mekhi Phifer was born and raised in Harlem by his mother Rhoda, a single mother and a school teacher. After graduation from high school in 1994, he planned on going to college. Phifer had also been signed by Warner Brothers and had plans to record a rap album. Those plans all changed when he landed the role in Clockers.
More movie roles quickly followed and he starred in High School High (1996), Soul Food 1997) with Vivica A. Fox and Vanessa Williams, Hell’s Kitchen with Angelina Jolie (1998), I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) with Jennifer Love Hewitt, Brandy and Freddie Prinze, Jr., O with Julia Stiles, 8 Mile (2002) with Eminem, and Dawn of the Dead (2004).
Although he had had many guest starring roles on television during his film career, Mekhi Phifer didn’t become a tv regular until he was cast as Dr. Gregory Pratt on NBC’s popular medical drama ER. In 2005 he also had a recurring role in HBO’s award winning show Curb Your Enthusiasm.
In 1999 Mekhi Phifer married Malinda Williams whom he met while filming High School High. The two have one son, Omikaye. They were divorced in 2003 but their relationship remains amicable. They have recently had roles in a film together A Day In The Life which has yet to be released.
Although Mekhi Phifer never became a rap star, his good looks have made him sought after in music videos. He has been in videos with En Vogue, Brandy and Eminem.
One of Mekhi Phifer’s other talents is playing poker. In 2004 he won the fourth tournament of Celebrity Poker Showdown against Matthew Perry, Dennis Rodman, Kevin Nealon, and Neil Patrick Harris. He also plays on the World Poker Tour and donates his winnings to the Love Our Children USA charity.
Another charitable venture of Mekhi Phifer’s is The Vine Group where he serves as the chairman of the board of trustees. They donate educational materials and financial resources to needy Nigerian schools. A research center, The Mekhi Phifer Research Center, a state of the art technology building has been named after him for the money he has personally donated.
Mekhi Phifer continues to act on the tv show ER and has added the titles of producer and director to his name. In 2006 he produced and directed the film Puff, Puff, Pass.
