Melanie Griffith Bio
Melanie Griffith

Veteran actress Melanson Griffith was born on August 9, 1957 in New York City, New York. As the daughter of advertising executive and actor Peter Griffith, and actress Tippi Hedren, Melanie was named after the character her mother played in the Alfred Hitchcock's classic The Birds. Melanie’s family lived on a ranch with several exotic animals that the family kept as house pets, including lions and tigers.

When Griffith was 14 she left home to live with 22-year old, twice divorced actor Don Johnson, who was co-starring with Melanie’s mother at the time. Four years later, the couple married. Just one year later, they divorced. Melanie struggled with alcohol and drug addiction from an early age. At age 23 she was hit by a car on Sunset Boulevard. Doctors determined that the accident would have resulted in death had she not been so intoxicated.

During her teens, Melanie worked as an extra in films such as Smith! (1969) and The Harrad Experiment (1973). However, her breakthrough role came in 1975 when she landed a feature role in the film Night Moves (1975).

Griffith hit her stride in the mid-80s, starring in films such as Body Double (1984), Something Wild (1986), and Working Girl (1988) – which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and a Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a comedy or musical. Also in 1988, Melanie was cast in Robert Redford's The Milagro Beanfield War. In 1990, she starred in Brian De Palma's critically panned adaptation of The Bonfire of the Vanities.

From 1980-87, Melanie was married to Steven Bauer. In 1989, love came calling a second time for Melanie and Don Johnson – the couple married, and were together for the next seven years. In 1996, Melanie married Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, after meeting on the set of Two Much (1995). Melanie had a child from each marriage: Dakota Mayi Johnson (born in 1985), Alexander Griffith Bauer (born in 1989), and Stella del Carmen Banderas (born in 1996).

Melanie’s career hit a second stride in the late 90s. In 1997, she starred as the tragic Mrs. Haze in Adrian Lyne's adaptation of Lolita. She then went on to star in Another Day in Paradise (1998), Woody Allen's Celebrity (1998), Crazy in Alabama (directed by her husband), Antonio Banderas (1999) and Cecil B. DeMented (2000).

In 2003, Melanie made her Broadway debut to rave reviews, starring as the murderous Roxie in the musical Chicago. Not only did Melanie’s critically-acclaimed performance raise her profile in the industry, it also gave her confidence in her singing and dancing abilities, which she had never showcased before in any performance.

Since 2005, Melanie has starred in The WB sitcom Twins as the mother to Sara Gilbert and Molly Stanton’s characters. In recent years, she has also kept an online journal as part of her official website, www.melaniegriffith.com, in which she discusses her struggles with addiction, clarifies tabloid rumors, and offers personal tips on meditation.

Both Melanie and her husband Antonio support several charities, including her mother Tippi Hedren's wildlife refuge, the Shambala Preserve.
