Michael Bloomberg Probably one of the most well liked Mayors of New York in recent years and certainly following on the heels of Rudy Giuliani would prove to be quite a task, to which Bloomberg has risen well. Giuliani was obviusly confident enough about his successor as he endorsed Bloomberg in the elections. Michael Bloomberg entered his second term as Mayor in 2005 after completing a first extremely successful term since 2001 as New York’s 108th Mayor. Michael Bloomberg born to a Jewish family of Polish ancestry, Charlotte, a secretary and William, a book keeper, in Brighton Massachusetts on St Valentine’s Day, 14 February 1942. He lived in Massachusetts until after he graduated college. Michael Bloomberg went to John Hopkins University and graduated in 1964 with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering and then he went on to earn his MBA from Harvard Business School. Bloomberg initially served as a partner at Salomon Brothers where he headed equity trading and systems development. After the sale of the company he started his own business, Bloomberg L.P. now a global media and financial data empire that sold financial information terminals to Wall Street companies. In his capacity as an entrepreneur Bloomberg went on to start a radio station in New York City. His entrepreneurial skills have gained him the position of the forty forth wealthiest person in the United States in the Forbes list of four hundred people in 2006, with an estimated fortune of $5.5 billion. Michael’s first wife was British born Susan Brown with whom he had two children Georgina and Emma. The couple divorced in 1993 but remain good friends.
During his period of being unmarried Bloomberg had a relationship with Diana Ross and Ann Reinking but nowadays Bloomberg’s girlfriend is Diana Taylor. The couple do not live in the normal Mayor’s residence, Gracie Mansion, but in his own property on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Bloomberg is adamant that the people’s taxes should not pay for the Mayor’s home. Due to New York City’s two term limits for the position of mayor, the incumbent mayor, Rudy Giuliani, was ineligible for re-election. Bloomberg, a lifelong member of the Democratic Party, decided to run for mayor as a member of the Republican Party.Voting in the primary began on the morning of 11 September 2001, but later that day, because of the attacks on the World Trade Center September 11, 2001, the primary was postponed. In the rescheduled primary, Bloomberg defeated Herman Badillo, a former Congressman, to become the Republican nominee. Bloomberg spent more than $72 million of his own money on the campaign and insisted that following the attacks on the World Trade Center that the city needed a mayor with business experience. The election means that the Republicans have held onto the mayor's office for four consecutive elections, or sixteen years. Bloomberg joins Rudy Giuliani and Fiorello LaGuardia as re-elected Republican mayors in this mostly Democratic city.
Once voted in to office Michael Bloomberg declined the Mayor’s salary and accepted just $1.00 annually and is known to be pro-choice, in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage.Another passion of Bloomberg’s is the introduction of anti-smoking across the world and in August of 2006, Bloomberg donated $125 million to a worldwide anti-smoking initiative designed to curb smoking. During the confirmation of John Roberts as Chief Justice of the United States, Michael Bloomberg was the most prominent Republican to oppose the confirmation. As a strong supported of abortion rights he felt that Roberts was not committed to Roe v Wade.During his second election campaign in October 2005 Bloomberg spent over $66 million and won by a huge majority of 20%. Once again he used his own money in order to over come the normal financial restrictions placed on candidates when using public funds. Under Michael Bloomberg’s Mayoral term New York became the first city in the United States to ban trans-fat from all restaurants. It will go into effect in July of 2008.Another area where Bloomberg is a strong advocate is that of gun control and he made it one of his main issues in his second inaugural address. Bloomberg is a supporter of immigration reform to secure the rights of illegal immigrants, who comprise a large part of the population of New York City. He argues that deportation breaks up families and scares illegal immigrants away from cooperating with law enforcement. He supports proposals like those put forth by Edward Kennedy and John McCain, which would normalize the status of otherwise law-abiding illegal immigrants already present. Should Bloomberg decide to run for President in 2008 as an Independent or a Democrat, he could find himself running against fellow New Yorkers, Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani. A one time runner himself, Al Sharpton has said that Bloomberg would be a compelling candidate. Bloomberg has often expressed in public his lack of interest in running for president and his personal doubts as to whether he would have the appeal to win a national election. Were he to do so, he would likely draw primarily from his own funds to finance his presidential run, just as has been the case with his mayoral campaigns. ABB |
