Michael Keaton Bio
Michael Keaton

Some stars are veterans of failed television pilots or very short lived shows before they hit it big. Michael Keaton is one of those stars. It took four failed television shows in three years during the late 1970’s for Keaton to make the jump to the big screen, where he had considerably more success.

Michael Keaton was born Michael John Douglass on September 5, 1951 in Corapolis Pennsylvania. Since there was already one Michael Douglas in show business, he decided to change his last name to Keaton professionally. The story goes that he read an article on Diane Keaton and decided he liked her last name.

Michael Keaton’s first big screen role was in 1982’s Night Shift. He co-starred with Henry Winkler and Shelly Long and earned critical accolades for his role. Later that year Keaton starred in the movie that would make him a true star – Mr. Mom. Playing a stay- at-home dad to Teri Garr’s career wife, audiences found him charming and lovable. Keaton followed that with the hilarious Johnny Dangerously (1984), Gung Ho (1986), and the classic Beetle Juice (1988) starring opposite a young Winona Ryder.

His successful career in the 1980’s was complemented by his marriage to actress Caroline McWilliams. The two have one son, Sean Willie. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1990. Keaton then began dating a pre-Friends Courteney Cox, and the two were together until 1995. Cox would later claim that one of the reasons her film career was not particularly successful before Friends was that her relationship with Keaton was too consuming.

Keaton has also been romantically linked to actress Michelle Pfeiffer and porn star Rachel Ryan.

Keaton’s career was still going strong at the end of the 1980’s, despite his marriage breaking up. He starred in the box office hit Batman (1989) with Jack Nicholson and Kim Basinger, and its sequel Batman Returns (1992) with Danny Devito and Michelle Pfeiffer, but chose not to continue with the franchise. Some consider that a bad career decision of Keaton’s part. He continued to make films steadily through the 1990’s but lost some of his box office clout.

The 1990’s found him starring in such films such as Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Speechless (1994) with Geena Davis, Multiplicity (1996) with Andie MacDowell, and Jack Frost (1998) with Kelly Preston. While none of the films were bad, none achieved any of the box office success that his fils in the 1980’s achieved.

Keaton continues to make movies and has had a few well received films such as 2005’s White Noise. That same year he also starred with Lindsay Lohan in the movie Herbie: Fully Loaded. In 2006 he lent his voice talents to the hit animated film Cars and stars in the movie The Last Time with Brendan Fraser.
