Michelle Pfeiffer Michelle Pfeiffer was born April 29, 1958 in Santa Ana, California. She is the second of four children. Before she was Catwoman and before she was Elvira, Pfeiffer worked many odd jobs, including supermarket checker in a Vons grocery store. She also studied to be a court reporter, but acting proved to be her true calling. Pfeiffer began her acting career primarily in television. She appeared in many 80s series such as CHiPs and Fantasy Island, as well as several made for television films like Callie and Son and the remake of Splendor in the Grass. In 1983, Pfeiffer took the part that remains one of her best known, best loved roles. She played Elvira Hancock, in Brian De Palma’s gritty, violent and brilliant film Scarface. Even starring opposite a great like Al Pacino, Pfeiffer stole the spotlight in all of her scenes. Pfeiffer enjoyed many subsequent film roles after the success of Scarface, including the fantasy-comedy The Witches of Eastwick (1987). Pfeiffer played one of three witches, along with Cher and Susan Sarandon. The three starred opposite the ever-unpredictable Jack Nicholson, who implemented his own personal flair into the role of Satan himself.
In 1988, Pfeiffer had the opportunity to star in Dangerous Liaisons. She played the innocent (and married) Madame Marie de Tourvel caught in a web of lust, lies and deception. John Malkovich as Vicomte Sébastien de Valmont and Glenn Close as Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil have never been more evil, wicked or delightful. The film also features a very young Uma Thurman and Keanu Reeves. Pfeiffer was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress and won the BAFTA Award in the same category. She followed this success with the 1989 classic The Fabulous Baker Boys. The film featured real-life brothers Jeff and Beau Bridges as musicians in love with the same woman (Pfeiffer). Anytime you’ve ever seen a sexy woman languishing on a piano and singing, you can thank this oft-spoofed film. Pfeiffer was the one to do it first, and for her sensual moves and subtle acting, she was yet again honored with an Oscar nomination. This time, she was acknowledged for a leading role. In 1991, Pfeiffer and Pacino teamed up again for the romantic comedy Frankie and Johnny. Kate Nelligan, Nathan Lane and Hector Elizondo (TV’s Chicago Hope, Tortilla Soup) served as an excellent supporting cast. As if Pfeiffer couldn’t land a role that didn’t similarly land her a nomination, she was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical. Then it was 1992. Tim Burton’s Batman Returns was released, and an icon was born. Pfeiffer’s Seline Kyle/Catwoman is to this day held up as one of the best screen portrayals of a seductress and villain. In fact, her role was named #3 in Empire’s “69 Sexiest Movie Characters of All Time.”
For an astonishing thirty years, Pfeiffer’s career has never faltered. In 1995, she starred in the very successful Dangerous Minds, and in 1996 she released an impressive three films—Up Close and Personal, To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday, and One Fine Day. She did something similar in 1999 with The Deep End of the Ocean, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and The Story of Us. In 2000, Pfeiffer released the horror-thriller What Lies Beneath with Harrison Ford, and followed it with the 2001 Oscar-nominated film I am Sam. Pfeiffer currently has several films either filming or in pre-production. Pfeiffer was married to fellow actor Peter Horton from 1981-1988, and dated actor Fisher Stevens for three years. In 1993 Pfeiffer decided to adopt a baby girl, Claudia Rose, and in the same year married wildly successful film writer/producer David E. Kelley. They had a son together in 1994 and are still married today. |
