Mick Fleetwood Bio
Mick Fleetwood
Before he was Fleetwood Mac to millions of music fans around the world, he was known only as Michael John Kells Fleetwood, born June 24, 1942 in Redruth, Cornwall, England. Even from an early age, Fleetwood showed an interest in drumming. His father, Mike Fleetwood (a Wing Commander in the Royal Air Force), bought young Fleetwood his first drum set at the age of thirteen. Fleetwood taught himself how to play by listening to records, among them were the Everly Brothers, Cliff Richards and The Shadows.
While Fleetwood showed little interest in school, his passions included music (of course), fencing and theater. He even played Ophelia in a school production of Hamlet. But by the age of fifteen, Fleetwood was seriously struggling in school. The family decided Fleetwood should move to London where his sister Sally lived, in order to pursue his dreams of becoming a musician.
Through a series of chance meetings, band unions and band breakups, Fleetwood finally teamed up with every member that would eventually comprise Fleetwood Mac. While the band went through many varied configurations, Fleetwood and bassist John McVie stayed from beginning to end. The most well-known arrangement of the band also included Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Nicks would eventually go on to have a successful solo career.
Under the name Fleetwood Mac, the band has released an impressive fifty albums. Two albums in particular were extremely successful in the commercial arena. Self titled Fleetwood Mac (1975) and Rumours (1977) both went platinum many times over. Rumours was awarded the Grammy for Best Album of the Year.
However, with the success came many problems. The band was badly mired in cocaine and alcohol, and the stress of superstardom coupled with addiction put tremendous strain on Fleetwood and his wife Jenny Boyd, whom he married, divorced, remarried and subsequently re-divorced. Fleetwood credits his third wife, Lynn Frankel, with helping him become sober. Fleetwood released his autobiography in 1990, for which the other members of Fleetwood Mac were publicly upset. Revealing intimate secrets about his fellow band members, Fleetwood later apologized for the book. He explained he needed the money after a bankruptcy in the 1980s (caused primarily by his rather prevalent addiction to cocaine).  Through all the strife, Fleetwood was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for his time and success with Fleetwood Mac.
Fleetwood also began pursuing his love of acting in the late 80s and continues to do so through the present day. His first real role was in 1987’s action-thriller The Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Additionally, he had parts on several television series such as Wise Guy and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Fleetwood also landed a role in Zero Tolerance (1995) with lead Robert Patrick (Ladder 49, Walk the Line). His next film in 1997, Snide and Prejudice, received much critical acclaim. Based in a mental institute that encouraged the patients to play out their delusions, Fleetwood portrayed Pablo Picasso. His last film appearance was a very minor part in 2001’s Burning Down the House.
Fleetwood’s love life has been as tumultuous and scattered as his career. Especially his marriage to first wife Jenny Boyd coincided with insurmountable stressors such as international fame and addiction. The two married and divorced twice, and just couldn’t make their union work. They have two children together. Fleetwood had a secretive affair with Stevie Nicks but later married Sara Recor from 1988-1992. He is currently married to Lynn Frankel, with whom he has two children, twins Tessa and Ruby.
