Mila Kunis
Although Mila Kunis played the role of Jackie, a character known for being very controlling and conceited, Kunis says in real life she is more of a girl-next-door type with a little bit of tomboy thrown in. Yet, her appearance on the cover of Stuff magazine, and being named to the Hot 100 list in Maxim magazine speaks of something completely different.
Kunis was born in Kiev, Ukranian SSR on August 14, 1983, although just as her native country’s name was changed to the Ukraine, her name was changed to Mila Kunis, after being named Milena Markovna Kunis at birth. Her family moved to Los Angeles, California when she was seven, and she learned to speak English by watching The Price is Right, saying Bob Barker’s slower speech pattern made this easier for her. At the age of nine Kunis entered acting classes at the Beverly Hills Studio, and she was later discovered by Susan Curtis, an entertainment manager.
Appearing in small television roles and commercials kept Kunis quite busy for a few years, and by the time she was 13 she was appearing in a movie with Hulk Hogan called Santa With Muscles. Her next movie was one filmed for television, Gia, and it starred her as the 11 year old fashion model Gia Carangi. Angelina Jolie played the adult version in the movie. After this success, Kunis continued to film small roles on television.
Kunis tried out for the role of Jackie on That 70s Show under false pretenses. Those trying out were supposed to be at least 18 years old, and she told them she would be 18 on her birthday. What Kunis didn’t tell them was on which birthday she would turn 18, as she was only 14 at the time of her audition. Regardless, she got the part, and went on to star as Ashton Kutcher’s girlfriend. The show also starred Topher Grace, Danny Masterson, Laura Prepon, Wilmer Valderrama, Debra Jo Rupp, and Kurtwood Smith.
It was no surprise when Kunis won an award from Movieline Magazine as the “One to Watch” and two Young Star Awards for Best Young Actress Performance in a Comedy Series. Prepon often called her “Husky,” because she suffers from heterochromia, meaning she has one blue eye and one green eye. In their scenes together, they were often sitting down, due to Prepon being a full seven inches taller than Kunis.
Another regular role for Kunis is the voice of Meg Griffin on the animated television series, The Family Guy. She adds her voice to the show, as do Seth Green, Patrick Warburton, Seth MacFarlane, and Alex Borstein. That identifiable voice of hers is in high demand, as she’s also voiced characters in Robot Chicken and the video game Saints Row.
After her initial success with That 70s Show, Kunis starred as a college-going murderer in American Psycho II along with William Shatner. She has also appeared in the film version of the play Tony & Tina’s Wedding and in the film Tom 51. Kunis hosted an MTV reality show along with Survivor alumnae Jerri Manthey, Gervase Peterson, and Ethan Zohn, called Seaside Survivor.
Although still very young, Kunis has been dating film star Macaulay Culkin for several years. They became engaged in early 2006. They have shopped for a wedding ring, but are unsure when the ceremony will be. |
