Miley Cyrus Biography
This teen singer and actress loves Chinese food, shopping, and cheerleading; and counts Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson, and Kelly Clarkson among her favorite musical performers. Already the writer of over one hundred songs, her future at just 12 looked bright for the young Miley. Added to all that, her success as the star of a TV program, Doc, along with her father Billy Ray Cyrus, made her a hot commodity in Hollywood.
Destiny Hope Cyrus was born on November 23, 1992, in Franklin, Tennessee. As a toddler, her parents nicknamed her Smiley because she wouldn’t stop smiling, and that pet name eventually turned into Miley. She grew up on a farm and attended Heritage Middle School until her work commitments forced her to get a private tutor.
Miley developed an interest in acting after she played Kylie on the television series Doc, which starred her father and ran from 2001 to 2004. From there, she went on to secure the role of Ruthie in Big Fish, which was directed by Tim Burton and starred Ewan McGregor, Danny DeVito, and Jessica Lange. She also appeared in the music video for Rhonda Vincent’s single If Heartaches Have Wings.
In 2006, Cyrus secured her signature role and began appearing as the lead character on The Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana. Her character is Miley Stewart, also known as Hannah Montana, who leads a double life as a school-attending teen by day and a famous pop star by night. The children’s show, focusing on a variety of adolescent issues, proved to be a wise investment for Disney, spawning albums, DVDs, music videos, video games and several books. Miley was nominated for her portrayal as Hannah as TV-Choice Breakout Star on Fox’s Teen Choice Awards, but the honor went to Zac Efron instead.
In addition to her acting talents, Cyrus also became known as a singer and songwriter, and a novice guitar player. She has written many of the songs featured on the show, and enjoyed a budding career as a pop star at just 13 years of age. Miley has performed in Orlando, Florida at Walt Disney World, and opened for the musical group, The Cheetah Girls for their twenty date concerts. She also released a soundtrack to Hannah Montana, which features her voice on singles such as “Best of Both Worlds,” “Who Said,” and “I’ve Got Nerve.” The soundtrack was released in October of 2006 and Miley later signed a four album record deal with Hollywood Records.
In her personal life, Miley counts fellow Disney actors Emily Osment and Mitchel Musso among her close friends. Her father is well known country singer, Billy Ray Cyrus. He had a smash hit in the 1990s with the country single “Achy Breaky Heart.” It is Miley’s favorite song by her father, and was quite popular in its time, but now it is quite often the subject of jokes and ridicule. Billy Ray played the role of Miley’s father in Hannah Montana. In June 2007, Miley released a double album titled, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, on which she was credited with having co-writing several of the songs on the album.
Along with most other celebrities at that time a Hannah Montana clothing collection was released by Disney in late summer 2007 which Cyrus helped to design. October 2007 saw Miley beginniing a 54 date North American tour staring in Missouri and ending in January 2008 in New York. The announcement of the tour was an instant sell out with many fans being left very disappointed with no tickets available. In September 2007 rumours began circulating that Miley was pregnant after photos were digitally enhanced to appear that she was pregnant. Miley's camp soon put a stop to the rumours by releasing a statement saying, "Someone doctored the photos and this story is completely fabricated!' Miley Cyrus appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show on November 21, 2007 where she discussed growing up in the limelight and being influenced by the 'older' Hollywood crowd, she was adamant that she would retain her childhood for as long as possible and grow up slowly.
