Milla Jovovich
Supermodel, actress, musician, and singer are all jobs that Russian born Milla Jovovich can put on her resume. By age 12 she was gracing the covers of fashion magazines, by 13 she was acting in movies, and by 19 Jovovich had already released her first album.
On December 19, 1975 Milla Jovovich was born Milica Natasha Jovovic in Kiev, Ukraine. In 1981, her family moved from the then USSR to London and eventually made their way to California. By high school Jovovich was attending Excelsior High School in LA with another up and coming actress named Christina Applegate. Milla Jovovich would later have a guest appearance with Applegate on Married with Children.
At age 11 she was spotted by fashion photographer Richard Avedon and she was placed in Revlon’s “Most Unforgettable Women in the World” campaign. Her first magazine cover for lei came just one year later, and in 1988 Jovovich was featured in the movie Two Moon Junction. Her next film, Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991), the sequel to 1980 film The Blue Lagoon with Brooke Shields, found Jovovich in a starring role. Her exotic looks and success as a model and actress at an early age, earned many comparisons to Brooke Shields.
Return to the Blue Lagoon was a commercial failure and Milla Jovovich’s role gave her a nomination for “worst new star” in the Golden Raspberry Awards. As a result, she had supporting roles in her next few films including Kuffs (1992) with Christian Slater, Chaplin (1992) with Robert Downey, Jr., and Dazed and Confused (1993) with Jason London, Ben Affleck, and Matthew McConaughey.
Still just 16 while shooting Dazed and Confused, Jovovich eloped with fellow co-star Shawn Andrews, but her mother had the marriage annulled within a month. Her next film role would not be until four years later, when she filmed 1997’s The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis. Again, she found romance on the set and married director Luc Besson. This marriage lasted two years.
During her four year hiatus from films, Jovovich released her first album, entitled The Divine Comedy. It was a mixture of pop music and Russian folk art. She also spent time leading a band called Plastic Has Memory.
After her return to film with the action thriller The Fifth Element, Jovovich found her acting niche in action/thriller films. She has starred in the films Resident Evil (2002), Resident Evil: The Appocolypse (2004), Ultraviolet (2006) and is slated to star in the third Resident Evil film in 2007. She has also had roles in other films such as The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) and Zoolander (2001) with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.
Professionally, Jovovich is going strong and her personal life seems on track, too. After being romantically linked to John Frusciante of Red Hot Chili Peppers, and actor Stephen Dorff, she became engaged to her Resident Evil director, Paul W. S. Anderson. Their engagement took place in 2003 but a date for tying the knot hasn’t been set.
