Minnie Driver
It’s hard to believe that audience’s first noticeable introduction to Minnie Driver was as a frumpy teenager in the 1995 film Circle of Friends. She gained over 20 pounds to play the role of Benny who eventually gains the heart of Chris O’Donnell’s character. That same year a much slimmer Minnie Driver also appeared in the Bond film Goldeneye, and audiences could not believe it was the same actress.
On January 31, 1970 Amelia Driver, Minnie to her friends and family, was born in London. Her parents raised her in Barbados and she attended finishing school in Paris and Grenbole. Her vast geographic upbringing probably contributes to her ability to speak various accents almost flawlessly. She studied drama at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London and began her acting career on various British television programs.
Following her films in 1995, Minnie Driver starred in Sleepers (1996) with Robert De Niro and Brad Pitt. She also starred in the dark comedy Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) with John Cusack. The two were romantically linked after the movie, but it didn’t seem to last long.
After, Driver was nominated for an Oscar in 1997’s Good Will Hunting opposite Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The movie was a favorite with critics and audiences alike. Again, Driver took interest in one of her co-stars; Matt Damon. The couple’s breakup was very public. The story goes that on the Oprah Winfrey Show Matt Damon announced that he was once again single; however, Minnie Driver did not know that she and Damon’s relationship had ended. Both Minnie Driver and Damon have since said this was not accurate.
Many roles in movies followed for Driver, such as Hard Rain (1999) with Christian Slater, a voice role in Disney’s Tarzan (1999), Return to Me (2000) with David Duchovny, Hope Springs with Colin Firth (2003), and The Phantom of the Opera (2004). Although she has worked steadily in film for years, Driver has not gained the box office clout that seemed possible after her work in Good Will Hunting.
In 2001 Driver became engaged to actor Josh Brolin, son of James Brolin and stepson of Barbra Streisand. The engagement lasted for three months. Minnie Driver abruptly ended the engagement and later said many of the couple’s difficulties stemmed from Brolin’s stepmother’s constant interference with their wedding plans.
In 2003 Minnie Driver took her career in a different direction by recording an album entitled Everything I’ve Got in My Pocket which was released in 2004. The album was a hit in the UK and songs from the album turned up on the television program Smallville. That same year she also started a recurring guest starring role on Will & Grace, which earned her an Emmy nomination.
Minnie Driver’s upcoming projects include a voice role in The Simpson’s Movie (2007) and a role in the upcoming film Nightwatching.
