Missy Elliot Missy Eliot was born as Melissa Arnette Elliot in 1971 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Her music career began in the late 1980’s when she formed the R&B group, Sista. The group included fellow singers LaShawn Shellman, Chonita Coleman, and Radiah Scott. Elliot was both a singer and songwriter. Elliot and the band began making demo tapes with the help of neighborhood friend, Timothy “Timbaland” Mosley. In 1991, they were signed to Elektra Records working under the management of Swing Mob after moving to New York City. After being signed to the label, Elliot and the rest of the group lived in one two story house with fellow singers signed to the Elektra label, including Ginuwine, Playa, and Tweet along with 100-plus other artists who had become a part of the Swing Mob family. . In 1994, Timbaland and DeVante produced the album, 4 All the Sistas Around the World, for Elliot’s debut group album. Unfortunately the album was never released. By 1995 many members of the Swing Mob family began to disperse, but Missy continued to work with Timbaland, Magoo, Ginuwine, and Playa. The influential songwriters would continue to collaborate throughout the rest of the 1990’s. In 1995, Timbaland and Elliot began working as a production and songwriting team. Throughout the next two years they released a series of hit singles for a number of up and coming artists, including the late Aaliyah. The team wrote and produced nine songs for Aaliyah’s second album, One in a Million. The album went double platinum and turned Missy Elliot and Timbaland into stars.
Elliot began appearing as a guest rapper for several acts including, Gina Thompson on her single, The Things You Do. In 1996, Elliot signed a deal with Elektra Records to create her own imprint, The Goldmind Inc. Missy also decided it was time to record her first solo album. She brought in Timbaland to produce most of her tracks. Her debut solo album, Supa Dupa Fly was released in 1997. The overall response to the album was mixed, but it did garner a hit single, Da Rain (Supa Dupa Fly). The album cemented Elliot as a recording star. That same year, Elliot collaborated with Lil’ Kim on the remix of Kim’s hit song, Not Tonight. The single also featured Da Brat, Angie Martinez and Left Eye. The remix was a hit and they performed it live at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1997. Elliot came out with her third album, Miss E…So Addictive in 2001. The album was a huge success and contained a series of hit singles and collaborations with hit singers and rappers. Some of the singles on the album include One Minute Man (with Ludacris and Trina), Get Ur Freak On, 4 My People, and Take Away (with Ginuwine and Tweet). The remix for Get Ur Freak On was included on the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider soundtrack. In 2005, Elliot released her sixth album, The Cookbook, which was also met with success. Missy was nominated for five Grammy awards in 2005 including one for Best Rap Album for The Cookbook. She is scheduled to come out with a Greatest Hits album in 2006. |
