Mohamed Al Fayed Bio

Mohamed Al-Fayed

Often referred to as the ‘Phoney Pharaoh’ this canny Egyptian business man seems to have the ability to charm the birds from the trees in every issue except the one that has become his personal crusade, to obtain a British Passport and in doing so has become an extremely controversial figure in British society and in recent years a unwelcome nuisance to Queen Elizabeth II and her family following the death of Princess Diana and his son Dodi.

Mohamed Al-Fayed was born on January 27th 1929 in Bakos, Alexandria, Egypt, the eldest son of a poor school teacher. But even in his early days in Alexandria, Al-Fayed knew he wanted to aspire to greater things. His first business venture as a youth was selling cans of drink on the streets of his home city and then moving on to selling sewing machines.

With all this pent up ambition it was a major coo to Al Fayed when he was introduced to the millionaire businessman Adnan Khashoggi who later employed him in his Saudi Arabian import business. Finally, Al Fayed had rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous. Eventually he married the sister of Khashoggi.

With his new found business experience Al-Fayed went on to launch his own shipping business in Egypt and in 1966 became a financial advisor for the Sultan of Brunei. By this time Al-Fayed had become a rich and successful businessman in his own right and moved to England in the 1970’s where he served on the board of directors for Lonrho in 1975. After a dispute with the company he resigned after just nine months.

Always feeling the need to better himself and to be accepted in the upper echelons of society, he and his brother began purchasing businesses and properties around the world that would give them recognition. They began with the Ritz Hotel in Paris, then moving on to target the famous English department store Harrods. The store is a recognized part of British opulence but in recent years has lost its warrents from the Royal Family due to Al-Fayed’s disputes over the truth relating to his son’s death. In a controversial campaign to gain the store Al-Fayed went head to head with his former employer, Tiny Rowlands of Lonroh but eventually sealed the deal with a 615 million pound take over.

Al-Fayed has been accused of adding the Al to the front of his name, which is a sign of wealth and respect in the Arab world, without having the right to do so. During the take over bid of Harrods he was also found to have lied about his wealthy Egyptian heritage and it is thought that it was that which led to his first refusal to a British Passport as he was seen as a man of dubious character.

All this comes despite Al-Fayed having had five British children by his second wife, Finnish socialite and former model, Heini Wathén, and paying millions of pounds in tax to the UK government. He has also given millions more to charities, such as the Great Ormond Street Hospital, and financed films, including ‘Chariots of Fire’ which starred Jeremy Irons and which his son Dodi co-produced.

In the summer of 1997 Al-Fayed bought Fulham Football Club with the intention of raising its fame in the world to that of Manchester United, the team famous for signing David Beckham. This investment saw Al-Fayed spending a huge 30 million pounds on transfers and signings of footballers to achieve his goal.

To Al-Fayed’s delight, in early 1997 his son Dodi and Princess Diana began dating and Fayed instantly used this to his advantage as leverage to making his way into British society. But in August of the same year the couple were killed in a high speed car chase with the paparazzi in Paris. Since then Al-Fayed made repeated allegations that the deaths were not accidental but were the result of a wide-ranging conspiracy involving the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip and MI5.

Fayed has sited, among the reasons for the conspiracy, that the British royal family and security officials could not accept the possibility that Diana might have a child with Dodi who would be of Arab extraction and he has repeatedly stated that Dodi was about to propose marriage to the Princess the night she died and that she was already pregnant with Dodi’s child. However, an enquiry into the accident concluded that Diana was not pregnant at the time of her death.

Al- Fayed has also claimed that he is the victim of a long-running smear campaign to associate him with Osama Bin Ladan’s terrorist group al Qaeda.

In 2005 Al-Fayed made a brief appearance in an episode of ‘Being Bobby Brown where he was seen giving Whitney Houston Viagra pills. His television experiences also include being interviewed in an outrageous episode of the Ali ‘G’ show hosted by Sacha Baron Cohen.

Al-Fayed was given the platform to express his theories surrounding the death of his son, Dodi, and Princess Diana when he was interviewed on ‘The Howard Stern Show’ in March 2007.

Fayed has an estimated fortune of between $880 million and $3.3 billion and with this in mind, in 2003, Fayed moved from the United Kingdom to Switzerland and in January 2005 Fayed moved again to Monaco in order to take advantage of a more favourable tax system. Fayed is now thought to carry a United Arab Emirates passport and has given up any claim upon British citizenship.
