Monica Potter Bio

Monica Potter Biography

American actress Monica Potter is known for her bubbly romantic comedies such as Head Over Heels and I’m With Lucy, but she has had a surprising amount of success in dramatic works as well such as Saw and Along Came a Spider. Recently, she has earned screen time and attention for her work on the popular television series Boston Legal.

Monica Gregg Brokaw, known popularly as Monica Potter, was born June 30, 1971 in Cleveland, Ohio. Born into a very close and very Catholic family, Potter’s parents were Paul Brokaw and Nancy Brokaw. Her father was an inventor, while her mother was a secretary.

Splitting her time between St Jerome Parish and Villa Angela Catholic School for Girls, she eventually graduated from Euclid High School. Potter’s early career ambitions were always to be an actress, and if that didn’t pan out, she wanted to be a nun.

By twelve, Potter was well on her way to the acting route and fast diverging from her clerical aspirations. She began modeling and even made her way into commercials. This truly sparked her interests in acting, and she began pursing roles in television and film.

Her first significant role came in 1994 on the well-known soap opera The Young and the Restless. She played Sharon Newman opposite regulars Eric Braeden, Melody Thomas Scott, Sharon Case, and many more.

When that role came to an end, Potter took a bit part in the 1996 Adam Sandler, Damon Wayans comedy Bulletproof. She followed with 1997’s drama thriller Con Air. She portrayed Nicolas Cage’s wife beside other cast members John Cusack, John Malkovich, Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi, and Dave Chappelle.

Next, Potter increased her dramatic credibility when she starred in A Cool, Dry Place with Vince Vaughn and Joey Lauren Adams. Proving her acting chops, producers started seeing potential in her good looks and likable screen presence.

They utilized those skills in 1998 when they cast her as lead in the romantic comedy The Very Thought of You with Rufus Sewell, Tom Hollander, Joseph Fiennes, and Ray Winstone.

Earning roles left and right, Potter also starred opposite Billy Crudup and Donald Sutherland in the Steve Prefontaine biopic Without Limits followed by Patch Adams with Robin Williams and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Potter received additional exposure when she took another romantic lead in Head Over Heels. This time around, her love interest was played by Freddie Prinze Jr, and costars included Shalom Harlow, Ivana Milicevic, and Sarah Murdoch.

Switching gears, Potter appeared in the crime drama Along Came a Spider with Morgan Freeman and continued this trend when she took a role in Saw, where she shared the screen with Cary Elwes and Danny Glover.

Others know her for her work in yet another romantic comedy I’m with Lucy opposite Craig Bierko, John Hannah, Gael Garcia Bernal, and David Boreanaz.

Her most recent project was a recurring role on the television series Boston Legal. She was a cast regular from 2004 to 2005, and she shared that billing with James Spader, Julie Bowen, Candice Bergen, and William Shatner.

In her personal life, she married Tom Potter in 1990. They had two children before divorcing in 1998. In June 2005, she married Daniel Christopher Allison. They had their first child in August of that year, and they are currently still together.

Potter was also romantically linked to Adam Duritz prior to her marriages. The Counting Crows song “Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby” was about her.
