Mr T Bio
Mr. T

80’s pop culture icon Mr. T was born Lawrence Tureaud on May 21, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois. As the second youngest of 12 children, Mr. T and his siblings were raised by their mother in a cramped, three-bedroom apartment in the south side of Chicago projects.

After graduating from Dunbar Vocational High School, Mr. T earned a football scholarship to Prairie View A & M University in Texas; however he was expelled after one year. Back in Chicago, he continued to pursue post-secondary education on other sports scholarships before joining the United States Army as a military policeman. Mr. T was recruited for the Green Bay Packers after completing his service. Unfortunately, a serious knee injury forced him to hang up his jersey and seek other fields of employment.

Next, he tried his hand as a bodyguard for such celebrities as Muhammad Ali, Diana Ross, and Michael Jackson. Charging a $3,000 per hour rate to his famous clients, Mr. T’s business card assured them they were in good hands by stating, “Next to God, there is no greater protector than I.”

Mr. T got his big movie break in the early 80’s, when Sylvester Stallone spotted him competing in “The World's Toughest Bouncer” contest on the TV show Games People Play. Stallone then cast him as Clubber Lang in Rocky III (1982), in which he first delivered the line that would become his catchphrase, “I pity the fool”.

Following his knockout performance in Rocky III, Mr. T landed a role on the small screen playing Sgt. BA ("Bad Attitude") Baracus in the NBC-TV series The A-Team. Sporting almost $300,000 worth of gold jewelry and the mohawk hairstyle of a Mandinka warrior, Mr. T garnered lots of attention and particularly earned the respect of children.

Mr. T took the responsibility of being a role model for 80’s youth seriously, and adopted a clean lifestyle absent of alcohol and drugs. In 1983, the cartoon Mister T premiered, featuring Mr. T’s character as a crime-fighting gym owner. In 1984, Mr. T recorded the rap album Mr. T's Commandments, which encouraged children to respect their parents.

In 1985, Mr. T made his foray into the world of professional wrestling as Hulk Hogan's tag-team partner in the first WrestleMania. He also made re-appearances as a special referee for wrestling matches in 1987 and 1994.

In 1995, Mr. T was diagnosed with cancer; ironically, T-cell lymphoma. Since then, he has continued to act in small film roles, made guest appearances on the TBN Christian television series and Late Night with Conan O Brien, and has graced the screen with parts in commercials for Comcast and MCI’s 1-800-COLLECT calling service.

In 2005, Mr. T announced that he would discontinue wearing his signature gold chains as a gesture to those who were left with nothing in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He has since also donated clothing and money to Katrina victims.

In October 2006, Mr. T premiered his reality show, I Pity the Fool. The show will feature Mr. T, a devout Christian, assisting others in need. Plot lines will range from Mr. T intervening at a car dealership where a female employee is being harassed by her co-workers, to visiting the home of a family to mentor their son who has fallen in with the wrong crowd. Although he has been offered roles on other reality TV shows such as The Surreal Life, Mr. T claims he has been waiting for the right opportunity, stating, “They ain't dealin' with no fool! My show's not about eating worms or swapping wives. The whole family can sit around and watch this.”
