Mya 

Triple threat singer/dancer/actress Mya was born Mýa Marie Harrison on October 10, 1979 in Washington, D.C. As a child, Mya, who is of both Italian and Jamaican descent, had a passion for the arts. She loved to sing, play violin, and dance; although she lost interest in dancing for a period of time. Mya returned to dance in her pre-teens as part of the dance troupe T.W.A. (Tappers With Attitude). She left the group to study at New York ’s Dance Theater of Harlem with Savion Glover, the choreographer/mastermind behind Broadway’s Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk.  Mya was a promising young tap prodigy who was recognized for her improvisational skills, and in one performance shared the stage with Gregory Hines.

After graduating from high school, Mya considered taking speech communications at the University of Maryland ; however the arts were beckoning, and this time, in the direction of music. Mya’s father, a professional musician, shopped around his daughter’s demo tapes to various record labels before eventually catching the attention of University Music’s president, Haqq Islam. He was impressed with what he heard, and signed Mya on to Interscope Records. 

Over the next two years at Interscope, Mya polished her debut album with the help of some of the best in the business, including Darryll Pearson, Babyface, Diane Warren, Wyclef Jean, Missy Elliot, and Sisqo. In April 1998, Mya release her self-titled, debut album, which included hits Movin' On and It's All About Me. The album became one of the top ten best-selling albums of 1998, and went on to sell over two million copies in the 
 

Also in 1998, Mýa gained serious exposure when she was featured on the Ol' Dirty Bastard and Pras' hit song Ghetto Supastar, from the Bulworth (1998) movie soundtrack. Mya received her first Grammy nomination for the song, which led to another big collaboration that year with BLACKstreet on their catchy tune Take Me There, featured on The Rugrats Movie (1998) soundtrack. 

Two years after her debut album hit stores, Mya followed-up with her sophomore album, Fear of Flying, featuring collaborations with Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, Jadakiss, Wyclef Jean, and Swizz Beatz. In 2003, she released Moodring, which featured the single Fallen. 

In 2001, Mya was featured with Pink, Christina Aguilera and Lil Kim for a sassy re-make of Lady Marmalade, which was featured on the soundtrack to Moulin Rouge and won a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration. 

Mya has also demonstrated her acting skills in the films Chicago (2002), also starring Queen Latifah; Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (2004); and the James Bond video game Everything or Nothing (2004). As an actress, Mya is sometimes credited under her full name, Mya Harrison. 

Mýa is currently working on her fourth studio album, Liberation, slated for release in January 2007 on Motown Records.
