Nancy Peloci After just five months as House Speaker, Pelosi raised a red rag to a bull when she made her rogue diplomatic visit to Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria and has continued to be a thorn in the side of George W Bush ever since. Nancy was born the youngest of six children to Italian-American parents in Baltimore, Maryland on March 26th 1940. At an early age Nancy was exposed to politics at an early age with her father being a U.S. Congressman, Thomas D’Alesandro. Pelosi’s high school education was completed at Baltimore’s Institute of Notre Dame and then she went on to graduated from Trinity College in Washington D.C. in 1962. After a period as an intern for Senator Daniel Brewster, Nancy went on to marry the man she had met while at Trinity College, Paul Pelosi and the couple moved to San Francisco. Nancy and Paul raised five children and once the youngest child became a high school senior she began her rise through Democratic politics and became party chairwoman for North California. Pelosi’s husband began to amass his fortune with investments in stocks in publicly traded companies. Their net worth is estimated at $25 million and this makes Peloci among the richest members of Congress.
During her political career Nancy has achieved many “firsts’. In 2001 she was elected the House Minority Whip and as such was the first woman to hold that position. In 2004 she was elected to lead both a minority and major party in the House of Representatives. As the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives she is the first woman, the first Californian and the first person of Italian descent to become Speaker, as well as being the first Democratic Party Speaker of the 21st Century. After George W Bush’s and Dick Cheney’s re-election in 2004 Nancy Peloci believed the Democrats should peruse impeachment proceedings against the President for misleading the Congress about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and for issuing wire taps without a warrant. In November 2006 Nancy Pelosi was unanimously chosen as the Democratic candidate for Speaker. The Speaker almost always comes from the majority party. Peloci won the vote and her victory came from a 233-202 vote. When Peloci was sworn in she stated that although we belong to different parties we serve one country. She was sworn in on January 9th 2007 and Pelosi announced a plan for action: If elected, she and the newly-empowered Democratic caucus would push through most of its program during the first hundred hours of the 110th Congress' term. The origin for the name "first hundred hours" is a play on words derived from former Democratic President Franklin D Roosevelt's promise for quick action on the part of government during his "first hundred days" in office. Newt Gingrich, the former Republican Speaker, had a similar 100-day agenda to implement the Contract with America. Since becoming Speaker Pelosi has joined with the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to condemn plans by George W Bush to increase troop levels in Iraq. In recent moths polls have shown Peloci to have a 49% approval rating making her the most popular of all House Congressional Leaders.Peloci represents San Francisco, one of the safest Democratic districts in the country.
She is a staunch supporter of the right to abortion and against parental notification when a minor is transported across state lines for an abortion, of equality for homosexuals and allowing the adoption of children by homosexuals in D.C., strongly pro-gun control and she supports the increase of Medicare and Medicaid benefits. Pelosi has six grandchildren from her five children. ABB |
