Natalie Imbruglia Biography

With one of the biggest hit singles of the 90s, Natalie Imbruglia is best known as a singer/songwriter. But this Australian beauty boasts several talents and has also worked as model and actress. With a new CD in the works, Natalie continues to delight her fans with her unique sound and lyrics.

Natalie Imbruglia was born on February 4, 1975, in Sydney, Australia. As a child, she studied ballet and hoped to one day make a career of dancing. Craving the spotlight at an early age, she auditioned for and appeared in several commercials, including television ads for Coke. When Imbruglia decided to leave high school at sixteen to pursue acting, she soon won a role on the television soap Neighbors, a venue where fellow singers Kylie Minogue and Holly Valance also launched their careers. After two years with the show, the versatile Imbruglia then decided that music was her true calling. She again found success, releasing her single Torn with BMG. The catchy tune was a massive international 90’s hit, reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, received massive airplay throughout the world, and sold more than four million copies worldwide. Impressed with the success of her first single, RCA Records granted her an album contract almost immediately.

Natalie’s debut album, Left of the Middle, which included her well-known single, also proved to be a success. Although it did not achieve the same level of popularity as Torn, her second single, Big Mistake, climbed to the number two spot. Wishing I Was There and Smoke, the two final singles from her album, also ranked impressively on the Billboard Top 100, as well as on the UK and Australian music charts. The album sold over one million copies and reached the top ten in the US and the UK. Imbruglia’s second album, the 2001 White Lilies Island, did not enjoy the same level of success as her debut. Her single Wrong Impression managed to chart in the Hot 100 Singles, but did not achieve the impressive standing of her past hits.

Nevertheless, her true fans remained loyal and the album sold about one million copies. After parting ways with her former record company over the rock-heavy sound of her newest recordings, Natalie released her third album, Counting Down the Days, in 2005 with Brightside Recordings. Refusing to compromise proved to be a wise decision for Natalie. Shiver, her first single, reached an impressive eighth on the UK charts and for the first time, her album also reached the coveted number one spot. Imbruglia is currently hard at work on her fourth album, which will be released sometime in 2007. With worldwide album sales totaling 7.5 million, Natalie boasts an impressive number of loyal listeners around the globe.

In addition to her music career, Natalie is also a spokesperson and model for leading cosmetics company L’Oreal. The partnership has seen her face appearing on television and in magazines in worldwide locales, including Italy and Malaysia. Imbruglia’s acting roles include her debut supporting role in the British comedy Johnny English, as well as her upcoming role in the Australian film Elise.

At one time, Imbruglia dated singer Lenny Kravitz. In 2003, Natalie married her long-time lover Daniel Johns. Johns, an Australian rocker, is a member of the successful group Silverchair, whose singles include the #1 hit Anthem for the Year 2000.

The couple did not have any children and in January 2008 they announced the end of their four year union, citing pressures of work as the main reason.

In early 2009 Natalie was seen spending many evenings in the company of British comedy man, David Walliams, famous for his parady roles in the UK TV show Little Britain, along with his partner, Matt Lucas. Rumours abounded of a more intimate relationship between Natalie and David.
