Natasha Bedingfield Biography

With catchy lyrics mixed with an equally catchy melody, singing sensation Natasha Bedingfield burst her way into the music biz just a few short years ago and has already garnered a Grammy Award nomination, international recognition, and critical acclaim and praise for her work.

Natasha Bedingfield was born on November 26, 1981, in Sussex, England, the daughter of New Zealander parents and the sister to established pop stars Daniel Bedingfield and Nikola Bedingfield. Natasha is most famous and lauded for her hit singles “These Words” and “Unwritten,” which followed her debut single release, aptly named “Single.” The Bedingfield siblings started a band together when they were teenagers called The DNA Algorithm, which they defined as a Christian rock band, although they experimented with all sorts of different kinds of music. Natasha was also an active member in her church, Hillsong London Church, as a worship leader and also in co-writing a number of songs for their album, Shout God’s Fame. Incidentally, Bedingfield also wrote songs for two other Hillsong-inspired albums.

The musician released her debut song single on May 3, 2004, in the U.K., which did well in the charts; she followed it up with the release of “These Words. “These Words” became an instant smash hit, quickly soaring to the coveted #1 spot in the U.K charts after its release. Later that same year, Bedingfield released Unwritten, her debut album, which hit #1 in the U.K., and went certified platinum three times over.  Her third single, “Unwritten,” was released a couple of months after her album release and also did well.

Soon, Bedingfield transferred her fame across the ocean to America, where, in May of 2005, “These Words” was released as her first single there, which peaked at #17 on the Billboard chart. Then in July, the American version of her album was released, which didn’t achieve the expected sales until the single “Unwritten” was released, which eventually peaked at #5, and helped to propel sales of her album, which later achieved gold status.  Unwritten” spent more than forty weeks on the chart and helped Bedingfield achieve a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Unwritten” also became the theme song for The Hills, an MTV reality show, starring Lauren Conrad; is featured in 2005’s The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, starring Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, Blake Lively, and Amber Tamblyn; and is used in short promotions for the new hit ABC comedy Ugly Betty, starring Ferrera, Vanessa Williams, and Salma Hayek. “Wild Horses,” another of Bedingfield’s singles, is used in the soundtrack of the 2006 movie Flicka, starring Tim McGraw, Maria Bello, and Alison Lohman. Further, Bedingfield had the honor of being asked by Sylvester Stallone to record Diane Warren’s “Still Here” as the Rocky Balboa title song.

Bedingfield released her follow-up album, Blank Canvas, in spring 2007.
