Nathan Lane Bio
Nathan Lane

Nathan Lane is a popular comedian and actor who has won several awards for his work on both stage and screen.

Born Joseph Lane on February 3, 1956, in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was named after his uncle, a Jesuit priest, and would later change his name to avoid confusion with another actor, choosing 'Nathan' in honor of the character Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls, whom he would go on to play on Broadway. His father was a truck driver and sometime police officer who loved singing but died as a result of alcoholism when Lane was just eleven. His mother was manic-depressive and stayed at home to look after him. He attended St. Peter's Preparatory High School, where he appeared in several plays and was voted Best Actor. This early enthusiasm developed into a serious commitment to an acting career, and upon graduation Lane moved to New York to begin working in theatre.

Lane's first Broadway role was in Terrence McNally's Lips Together, Teeth Apart, alongside Swoosie Kurtz, Christine Baranski, and Anthony Heald. He became a great friend of the writer and went on to appear in several of his other works, receiving critical acclaim for Love! Valour! Compassion! Subsequently, Lane appeared alongside the magician Doug Henning in Merlin, an ambitious flop which also starred the young Christian Slater. His first Best Actor Tony Award came for his performance as Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a role originally played by Zero Mostel. Many years later, Lane won another Best Actor Tony for another Mostel role, that of Max Bialystock in The Producers (which he took on at the last minute after Richard Dreyfuss had to drop out). He was later to reprise that role in a remake of the Mel Brooks film with Matthew Broderick, Uma Thurman and, Will Ferrell.

Lane's other notable theatrical work has included an appearance in Stephen Sondheim's adaptation of Aristophanes' The Frogs (with Roger Bart, Peter Bartlett and John Byner) and a turn as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, filmed for television with Roger Daltrey, Jackson Browne, Natalie Cole, and Debra Winger.

Early in his career, Lane was a regular in the TV show, One of the Boys. He would later appear in shows such as Miami Vice (with Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas), The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd (with Drew McVety and Richard Venture), Frasier (with Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce) and Sex and the City (with Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall). Inevitably, Lane also found himself drawn into Hollywood, and has since appeared in over fifty films, including such diverse hits as Frankie and Johnny (with Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer), The Birdcage (with Robin Williams, Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest) Love's Labour's Lost (with Alicia Silverstone and Kenneth Branagh), Austin Powers: Goldmember (with Mike Myers and Beyoncé Knowles), and Nicholas Nickleby (with Anne Hathaway and Christopher Plummer). Besides this, he showcased his vocal talents for The Lion King and Stuart Little movies.

Lane has been open about his homosexuality since the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, feeling that his own visibility may help others who are dealing with isolation. He came out to his mother at the age of 21 to be told she would rather he were dead. "I knew you'd understand," he told her, but the two were later reconciled and he praised her for being very accepting.
