Nelly Furtado
Nelly Furtado is an award-winning Canadian singer and songwriter known for her wide-ranging musical skills and the multicultural influences in her work.
Nelly Kim Furtado was born on December 2nd, 1978, to Portuguese parents living in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Named after the Soviet gymnast Nellie Vladimirovna Kim, she has a brother, Michael Anthony Furtado, and a sister, Lisa Anne Furtado. Nelly grew up speaking Portuguese and English and later learned Spanish and Hindi. At the age of four she got her first experience singing in public, performing a duet with her mother in church for Canada Day. At eight years old Furtado received a tape recorder and microphone to help her develop her vocal skills. She learned to play the trombone and ukulele, and later the guitar and keyboards. By the age of twelve Furtado was writing her own songs. She played in a marching band and studied dance, performed in school musicals and sang back-up for a local hip-hop band, and eventually moved to Toronto to form her own band, Nelstar. There she participated in a talent contest where she was spotted by Gerald Eaton and Brian West of the Philosopher Kings, who persuaded her to record an album.
Furtado's début, Whoa Nelly!, was released by DreamWorks in 2000 and spawned the Grammy-winning single I'm Like a Bird. The album received critical acclaim because of its diverse mixture of musical styles, drawing on Furtado's multicultural background and experiences with a range of different communities in Toronto. Her experience as a performer meant that she was instantly able to cope with touring alongside Moby and later on the Lilith Fair tour with Beth Orton, Chrissie Hynde and Sarah McLachlan. She also released a duet with Missy Elliott.
In 2003 Furtado took time out from touring to give birth to a daughter, Nevis, whose father is DJ Lil' Jaz (aka Jasper Gahunia), her boyfriend of four years. The couple have since separated but remain close friends and active co-parents. Furtado continued to write and record music throughout her pregnancy and two months after the birth she released her second album, Folklore. The album was more rock-orientated than its predecessor and contained a lot of acoustic work. It was acclaimed for its originality but enjoyed only moderate commercial success. It did, however, contain the hit single Força, official anthem of the 2004 European Football Championship, which Furtado performed live at the final in Lisbon.
Furtado's third album, Loose, produced by Timbaland, came out in 2006 and swiftly re-established her in the limelight. It included the collaborations No Hay Igual (with Calle 13) and Te Busqué (with Juanes). The album’s theme was assertively sexual. Furtado attributed her new sexual confidence to books on Chinese medicine and also to the acting classes she had taken while preparing for a role in a Hindi language film which was never ultimately produced. She has contributed to several film soundtracks, including those for Brokedown Palace (with Claire Danes, Kate Beckinsale and Bill Pullman), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (with Angeline Jolie, Jon Voight and Iain Glen), and The Princess Diaries (with Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway).
Over the course of her eclectic career Furtado has made several notable collaborations with other artists, including Esthero, Ashe Bhosle, Dave Stewart, Paul Oakenfold, Michael Bublé, Lil' Wayne and Brooke Hogan.
