Nick Nolte Bio
Nick Nolte
Nicholas (Nick) King Nolte was born February 8, 1941 in Omaha, Nebraska. His father was a farmer and an irrigation pump salesman while his mother was a department store buyer. Known for his characteristic athleticism, Nolte attended Arizona State University on a football scholarship. He also attended Eastern Arizona College and Phoenix College. However, poor academic performances forced Nolte to abandon university and pursue acting full-time.
Nolte studied at the famous Pasadena Playhouse and Stella Adler’s Academy. He traveled the country finding bit parts in regional theater until his first encounter with the law landed him five years probation. (He was selling fake draft cards.)
Nolte acted consistently in admittedly small roles and was often not even credited in his earliest works. However by 1975, Nolte was landing lead roles in respectable films, such as when he costarred with Don Johnson in Return to Macon County. While not revered in any film circles as a classic, it remains an interesting piece of nostalgia for anyone that grew up in the 50s.
In 1976, Nolte finally landed his breakthrough role. He played Tom Jordache in the television mini-series Rich Man, Poor Man. Nolte earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Best TV Actor. This mini-series helped launch two careers—both Nolte’s and that of a very young Peter Strauss.
For the next thirty years, Nolte continued to be extremely prolific in his film career, which continues even today. He has starred in over forty films, always greatly varying the type and demeanor of character he chooses, solidifying him as one of the most versatile actors of our time. Nolte is known for such films as Weeds (1987), Cape Fear (1991), The Prince of Tides (1991), Lorenzo’s Oil (1992), Jefferson in Paris (1995), Mullholland Falls (1996), Affliction (1997), The Thin Red Line (1998), and Hotel Rwanda (2004).
The Prince of Tides and Affliction garnered Nolte Oscar nominations for Best Actor, but amid tough competition, lost out both times—first to the chilling performance of Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs and then to the spirited performance of Roberto Benigni in Life is Beautiful. Nolte has won one Golden Globe for his performance in The Prince of Tides. Another award in Nolte’s repertoire is his title as People Magazine’s 1992 Sexiest Man Alive.
Nolte has just completed filming for Quelques jours en septembre, and he is in production for The Death of Harry Tobin with costars Neve Campbell and Tim Roth.
Unfortunately, Nolte is now almost as infamous as he is famous. His drinking and drug habits became fodder for American gossip television in 2002 when Nolte was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. Later test results revealed GHB in his system, and the famous Nolte mug shot became pop culture iconography. Nolte checked himself into the Silver Hill Hospital in Connecticut for counseling, and even today continues his battle for sobriety. In 2004, Nolte was sued for negligence by the parents of a fifteen year old girl who was sexually assaulted at a party held in his Malibu home. The parents claimed Nolte was aware minors were in possession of both alcohol and drugs but let the party continue regardless.
Nolte was married to Sheila Page from 1966 to 1970. When the two married, Nolte also received two stepchildren. His next wife was Sharyn Haddad from 1978 to 1983, and his third wife was Rebecca Linger. Their marriage lasted from 1984 to 1994, and they had one son together, Brawley Nolte. Brawley has appeared as the kidnapped son in Ransom opposite Mel Gibson and Rene Russo as well as the 1997 Nolte film Affliction.
