Nicole Vaidisova
Czech star Nicole Vaidisova is an extremely young but talented face in the world of professional tennis. She is known for her signature and dangerous serve and her association with Reebok.
Nicole Vaidisova was born April 23, 1989 in Nurnberg, West Germany. She took up the sport of tennis at just six years old and has been training ever since. She trained under Nick Bollettieri at his tennis academy in Florida.
Vaidisova made her big debut in 2003 by competing consecutively in three finals. Just one year later, she was ranked as one of the top 100 players in the world. Coming in at number seventy-four, she was the youngest player on the list.
She increased her position and clout even further when she took down the twenty-ninth player Tatiana Golovin. Finishing with a 31-8 record, fourteen-year-old Vaidisova finished the year at number seventy-two.
After an impressive showing in early 2005 and only suffering a loss from top seeded Lindsay Davenport, Vaidisova found herself at number fifty-seven. She continued winning, and April was the first time she broke the top fifty, coming in at forty-seven.
More pivotal match-ups included a win over Anastasia Myskina and a loss to Venus Williams. When all was said and done, August found Vaidisova at an impressive number twenty-seven.
Her first 2005 title came in Seoul when she took down the favored Jelena Jankovic, and her ranking, not surprisingly, rose again. She was at a career high number twenty-one. Just a few months later, she was named the eighteenth best player in the world.
With all the impressive wins she accrued, Vaidisova joined impressive company. She was only one of six women to take five Tour single titles before the age of seventeen. The only other women to accomplish this were Tracy Austin, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Andrea Jaeger, and Jennifer Capriati.
And her 2006 season was even better than the previous. Taking down Amelie Mauresmo, she met Williams again in the French Open. This time, however, she won. Always seeming to improve, the number nine ranked Vaidisova was finally one of the top ten players in the world.
She had another busy year in 2007, but it seemed to be marked by frequent defeats in the final rounds. She also had to withdraw for two months due to glandular fever.
Vaidisova’s career high ranking was number seven, which she achieved on May 14, 2007. She was also named the new face of Reebok and has since been seen in both their “Run Easy” and “I Am What I Am” campaigns.
In her personal life, Vaidisova’s coach is Alex Kodat, who is also her stepfather.
Her interests outside of tennis include reading, yoga, the national hockey league, and pop music, especially that of Madonna.
