O J Simpson Biography
Fallen football hero OJ Simpson was born Orenthal James Simpson on July 9, 1947 in San Francisco, California . As a child, Simpson contracted rickets, and had to wear homemade braces from age three to five. At just thirteen years old, he became a member of a San Francisco street gang known as the Persian Warriors, and by his mid-teens he was incarcerated at the San Francisco Youth Guidance Center . In high school, Simpson excelled on the Galileo High football team. During this time, he also had an early brush with fame when met future contender for the Trial of the Century title, Michael Jackson. When Simpson was twenty years old, he married Marguerite L. Whitley. The couple had three children: Arnelle L. Simpson (born December 4, 1968) Jason L. Simpson (born April 21, 1970) and Aaren Lashone Simpson (born September 24, 1977). In 1979, the couple encountered tragedy when son, Aaren drowned in the family's swimming pool. That same year, they divorced.
Simpson played Junior College football at the City College of San Francisco, eventually moving up to University of Southern California (USC) where he was awarded the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, and became the first draft for professional football in 1969. Simpson went on to play for the Buffalo Bills, initially averaging only 622 yards per season. By 1973, Simpson set a then-record 2,003 yards, making him the first player ever to pass the 2,000-yard mark and garnering him the league’s title of Most Valuable Player.
“The Juice” finished his 11-year career in 1979, one year after being traded to the San Francisco 49ers. On January 23, 1985 he became the first Heisman Trophy winner elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The year Simpson retired from football, he married Nicole Brown. The couple had two children: Sydney Brooke Simpson (born October 17, 1985) and Justin Ryan Simpson (born August 6, 1988). In 1992, the couple divorced.
After retiring from football, Simpson went on to star in films such as the television mini-series Roots (1977) and various other films such as The Naked Gun trilogy, in which he played likeable Nordberg, sidekick to Leslie Nielsen’s cop character. Simpson was also considered for the lead role in The Terminator (1984) which later went to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Reportedly, he was considered too nice to play a villain. Simpson was also a spokesman for Hertz rental car company, in which he was featured in television commercials running through the airport.
In 1994, Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her companion, Ron Goldman were found brutally stabbed to death in Brown Simpson’s home. Simpson was arrested a few days later after fleeing his house in a low-speed car chase, driven by his friend Al Cowlings and pursued by LAPD. The resulting murder trial was broadcast live, and would dominate the media for the next nine months. On October 3, 1995, Simpson was acquitted in criminal court of the murders. However, in 1997 he was held liable in civil court for both slayings. Simpson publicly vowed to devote the rest of his life to finding the real killer of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. To date, no one else has been charged with their deaths.
In late-November 2006, Simpson was to appear on a Fox special called OJ Simpson: If I Did It, Here's How It Happened. The show was pulled after much public outcry. In addition, Simpson also released an accompanying book titled If I Did It. Families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman expressed their outrage over these ventures and the media outlets for giving Simpson the opportunity to garner exploitative publicity and profit.
