Pat Benatar
Patricia Mae Andrzejewski (better known as Pat Benatar) was born January 10, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up in the Lindenhurst New York area with her Polish-Irish family. Benatar’s mother Millie sacrificed her own singing career in order to raise her children, and Benatar quickly picked up where her mother’s training had left off. Both avid studiers of opera, Benatar began her singing career in a very classical vein. Her 4.5 octave voice had won her acceptance into the highly selective and prestigious Julliard.
However, at the age of nineteen Benatar shocked her family by marrying high school boyfriend Dennis T. Benatar (thus obtaining the name with which she would become famous). Dennis was a soldier, and the two quickly moved to Virginia where he was stationed. She worked as a bank clerk but the monotony of day to day life began to drag her spirits down. She missed the excitement and thrill of singing and performing. Benatar joined a Richmond-based band called Coxon’s Army. Led by Benatar’s voice and persona, the band quickly rose to quasi-fame. Spirits lifted by this success, Benatar and her husband moved to New York City. But lifestyles and circumstances were just too different. She was a rock star destined for fame, and he was a soldier. They two divorced soon after the move to New York.
In 1977, Benatar attended amateur night at Manhattan’s famous club “Catch a Rising Star.” She performed to a successful reception on several occasions, but it wasn’t until Halloween when she would truly launch her career. Wearing outrageous makeup and an equally as outrageous costume, she sang as she always did for the crowd. Instead of their polite applause she was met with a raucous reception. Benatar had always known she had the singing talent, but now she had the persona as well. Destine for fame, she was quickly signed to Chrysalis Records.
Everything seemed to be working out great for Benatar, but she longed for something more in her singing career. In short, she was sick of singing Judy Garland covers. Instead, she wanted to rock out like Led Zeppelin. She obtained this chance when she was introduced to Cleveland native Neil Giraldo. Playing an aggressive guitar, he was able to unleash Benatar’s inner rocker.
Together, they released a slew of successful albums throughout the 1980s. In 1979, she released her debut album In the Heat of the Night which peaked at #12 on American charts. In 1980, she followed this album up with Crimes of Passion, climbing all the way to #2. By her third album Benatar had achieved what most musicians only dream about. With her 1981 release Precious Time she received a #1 chart topping album. And while she would never reach the #1 spot again, she did release many more successful albums, one on top of the other. Get Nervous (1982), Live from Earth (1983) and Tropico (1984) all stayed within the top fifteen.
Benatar has achieved many feats in the musical world, but none quite so impressive as her Grammy record. From 1980 to 1983, for four consecutive years, Benatar won the Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female. She was also nominated in 1985, 1986, 1988 and 1989.
Benatar is known for her rocker sound backed by a wonderful voice. She is also known for dealing with tough subject matter such as child abuse or her repeated metaphor of love as a battlefield. While her sound began very heavy, by 1983 it had mellowed significantly. She released such pop hits around this time as Love is a Battlefield and We Belong. Pat Benatar has made numerous television appearances, where she mostly plays herself as she did when appeared with her husband in an episode of 'Charmed', starring Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty. Benatar still writes songs and tours with her husband, Giraldo. All in all, she has six platinum albums and four gold solo-albums. Reinforcing her status as a pop/rock icon, Benatar’s music video You Better Run was only the second music video ever to be aired on MTV. Its debut was August 1, 1981.
Her first marriage lasted from 1971 to 1979. Her current marriage to Giraldo began in 1982 on the island of Maui. Giraldo and Benatar have two children together, Haley and Hana.
