Patricia Arquette

Patricia T. Arquette was born April 8, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois, but shortly after her birth the family moved to a commune just outside of Arlington, Virginia. It was little surprise to her family or the public when Arquette expressed an interest in acting. After all, her father was actor Lewis Arquette and her grandfather was comedian Cliff Arquette, most known for his character Charley Weaver on the original Hollywood Squares. Arquette’s siblings are just as successful in the world of cinema and television. She is sister to Rosanna, Alexis, Richmond and David (and consequently sister-in-law to former Friends star Courteney Cox). Arquette’s mother is the daughter of a Holocaust refugee, and her father is a descendant of the famed explorer Meriwether Lewis.

At the young age of fifteen, Arquette ran away from home to live with sister Rosanna. She attempted to break into show business for three uncertain years until she finally landed a role in 1987’s Pretty Smart. While often dismissed as 80s film fluff (even described as Revenge of the Nerds, just with girls) it was nevertheless an acting job for the now-eighteen year old Arquette. The same year, she starred in the horror film A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Even though it was the third installment of a horror series, almost always a bad sign, the film is often cited as one of the best in the series.

Arquette continued to work in the late 80s and early 90s, but many of her films were widely panned and widely forgotten. She starred in such lackluster movies as Daddy, Time Out, Far North and Prayer of the Rollerboys. However, by 1991 Arquette had landed a quality and memorable role. She co-starred in the Diane Keaton directed made-for-TV film Wildflower with Beau Bridges and a young Reese Witherspoon. For her portrayal of an abused, epileptic and partially deaf woman, Arquette won the CableACE award for Best Actress in a Movie or Mini-Series.

Always holding a flair for independent film, Arquette next starred in the cult comedy Inside Monkey Zetterland (1992) with Sofia Coppola, Rupert Everett and Martha Plimpton. She also had a small role in the Edith Wharton adaptation Ethan Frome (1993) with Liam Neeson and Joan Allen. Returning to the cult genre, Arquette validated all her previous accolades with her fine performance in the Tony Scott directed, Quentin Tarantino written thriller True Romance (1993). Arquette was nominated for a Satellite Award for Best Actress and with costar Christian Slater earned an MTV Award nomination for Best Kiss.

In 1994, Arquette starred in the movie Betrayed by Love with Steven Weber. While the film was only mildly received, in the eyes of many Arquette fans, it remains one of her best films. She followed this with the Leonard Nimoy (AKA Star Trek’s Spock) film Holy Matrimony (1994). Dramatically shifting gears again, she went on to star in Tim Burton’s biopic Ed Wood starring Johnny Depp.

Yet again seamlessly switching genres, Arquette demonstrated her range and talent in 1995’s Beyond Rangoon. This film is also often cited by Arquette fans as some of her greatest work. In 1996, she opted for a more commercially independent film with Flirting with Disaster opposite Ben Stiller, Téa Leoni, Mary Tyler Moore, and Alan Alda.

Always seeming to have a project on her plate, Arquette worked steadily throughout the 90s. Some highlights included David Lynch’s 1997 surreal thriller Lost Highway, Hi-Lo Country (1998), Stigmata (1999) and Martin Scorsese’s Bringing out the Dead (1999).

The turn of the millennium proved to be less commercially fruitful for Arquette, although still works consistently. With her previous success, Arquette used her acting freedom to star in the Charlie Kaufman written Human Nature (2001), the family oriented Holes (2003), and Tiptoes (2003). In 2005, Arquette landed the lead in the new television series Medium. Playing everyday mom Alison Dubois (who just happens to have visions of murders and the ability to hear thoughts), Arquette won the 2005 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama and was nominated for a Golden Globe the following year.

Arquette has been married twice. Her first marriage was to Oscar winner Nicolas Cage from 1995 to 2001. Her second marriage was to actor Thomas Jane in June 2006 (after a four year engagement). They are still together and have one child, Harlow Olivia Calliope. In 1989, Arquette and musician/sometimes actor Paul Rossi had a son together, Enzo.
