Paul Guilfoyle
Yale graduate and veteran actor Paul Guilfoyle is best known for his recent role as Captain Jim Brass in the CBS hit forensic drama series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. He was born on April 28, 1949 in Boston, Massachusetts and is not related to Paul Guilfoyle, the 1920s Broadway musical actor and character actor born in 1902, and who appeared in almost three decades of films. (The elder Paul died in 1961 from heart failure.)
The younger Paul graduated from Yale in 1977 with a major in Economics. After completing his education at Yale, he went on to study at the prestigious Actor’s Studio. Using his training at the Actor’s Studio, Paul went on to build up a substantial reputation in the theater both on and off Broadway.
When he was 19 he appeared in his first and somewhat obscure play in a small theater. Somehow the news got out that Paul Guilfoyle was playing a role in the play, and a bus of 40 fans turned up to see their favorite actor…the elder Paul Guilfoyle who had at that time been dead for 12 years.
Paul’s later theatrical credits include the Broadway Productions Search and Destroy, The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel (with Al Pacino), Richard III, and David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross. He has also appeared in the productions Death Defying Acts, Those the Rivers Keeps, Mink on a Gold Hook, Loose Ends, Endangered Species, and Henry V.
Paul made his television debut in 1986 with the TV movie Roanoak, an American Playhouse production.
His other television credits include the series Secret Agent Man, Law and Order, Miami Vice, and Kate and Allie.
The first big screen film Paul starred in was the bizarre science fiction action movie, Howard the Duck (1986). The movie is about an extraterrestrial cigar smoking drake (Howard) who was accidentally brought to earth through a scientific experiment involving a laser beam. Paul played Lieutenant Welker.
While Howard the Duck was a complete flop, the movie allowed Paul to polish his skills acting as a police officer. Since then he has become one of the industry’s leading actors, specializing in acting the roles of shady lawyers, good and crooked cops, and gangsters.
Some of the more successful films Paul has appeared in include Final Analysis (1992), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Striptease (1996), L.A Confidential (1997), Air Force One (1997) with Harrison Ford, Amistad (1997), Primary Colors (1998), The Negotiator (1998), Random Hearts again with Harrison Ford (1999), and Session 9 (2001).
During his acting career so far, Paul has been featured in more than 70 films.
Paul is an avid hockey fan. When he was in high school he was an exceptional hockey player. In 2005 he participated in the Seattle Hockey Challenge for the Ronald McDonald House Charity. He lives with his wife Lisa Giobbi and their daughter Snowden in New York City. |
