Paul Newman
Accomplished Actor and director Paul Newman was born on January 26, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio. Paul served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before accepting an athletic scholarship from Kenyon College. He originally planned to pursue a career in athletics; however a sports injury forced him to seek out other endeavors.
In 1947, Newman moved to Illinois and married actress Jacqueline Witte in 1949. The couple had a son, Scott, who died in 1978 from an accidental drug overdose, as well as two daughters named Susan and Stephanie.
In Illinois, Paul took over his father’s sporting goods store, but eventually turned the family business over to his brother and enrolled at the Yale School of Drama to study acting. On a break from school, Paul landed a role in the CBS television series The Aldrich Family. In 1953, he made his Broadway debut in Picnic, where he caught the attention of Warner Bros. executives.
Paul was initially hyped as the “new” Marlon Brando after first arriving in Hollywood. However, his big-screen debut, The Silver Chalice (1954) was met with poor reviews. After returning to Broadway to star in The Desperate Hours, Paul starred in The Rack (1956), which was also poorly received. Also in 1956, Paul played boxer Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me, which scored big at the box-office and garnered rave reviews from critics.
1958 was a big year for Paul. He starred in The Long Hot Summer with Joanne Woodward, and split with first wife Jacqueline to marry his co-star, Joanne. Also in 1958, Newman starred opposite Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, for which he received his first Academy Award nomination.
Paul and Joanne had three daughters together, being Melissa Steward, Elinor Teresa, and Claire “Clea” Olivia. The couple also went on to star in various films together, including Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys! (1958) From the Terrace (1960), Paris Blues (1961), A New Kind of Love (1963) and Winning (1969). In 1968, Newman and his wife made their directorial debut in Rachel Rachel, which was recognized with Best Director honors from the New York critics, as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Also during the 60s, Paul appeared in such classics as The Hustler (1961), Hud (1963) and Cool Hand Luke (1967).
In 1968, Newman starred with Robert Redford in the highest-grossing Western in movie history, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. During the late 60s and early 70s, Paul expressed his social consciousness through films such as WUSA (1970) as well as speaking publicly in support of the civil rights movement. In 1968, Newman and his wife actively supported the Democratic Presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy. This ranked Newman as number 19 on Richard Nixon's list of enemies, which Paul has described one of his proudest achievements.
In 1971, Newman announced the formation of First Artists, a production company he co-founded with Barbra Streisand and Steve McQueen to assist performers in producing their own projects. He and Robert Redford re-teamed two years later to star in The Sting (1963), which received an Oscar for Best Picture.
After starring in some disappointing projects during the late 70s and early 80s, Paul began making fewer appearances on the big-screen. For his role in the 2002 film Road to Perdition, he became a ten-time Oscar nominee.
In 2005, at the age of 80, Newman starred in the critically-acclaimed HBO miniseries Empire Falls, for which he received a Golden Globe. Most recently, he has lent his voice to Pixar’s animated film Cars (2006).
Newman’s commitment to charitable work includes creating the Scott Newman Foundation in memory of his son. He also markets a line of gourmet grocery items under the name Newman's Own, and donates all profits to children who suffer from cancer.
Paul and his wife Joanne currently divide their time between homes in Westport, Connecticut (where they own the Westport Country Playhouse), and Golden Beach, Florida. |
