Paul Young Bio

Paul Young

Another early 1980’s British singing sensation who came to prominence during the New Romantic era along with Duran Duran, Wham, Adam Ant and Spandau Ballet and who’s career has spanned the past three decades in some form or another.

Born Paul Anthony Young on January 17th 1956 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England the middle child of three children having an older brother and a younger sister. Young attended Ashcroft High School in Luton until he was sixteen after which he went to work at the Vauxhall Motor company as a factory worker building cars.

Already with a desire to build a career in music Paul learned to play the piano and the guitar and in his spare time Paul played bass guitar with local bands. In the 1970’s he joined a band called ‘Streetband’ and had a minor hit with a slightly light hearted track entitled ‘Toast’ in which he describes his feelings about toast from when he was a child in a high chair. The single reached number 18 in 1978 in the UK charts.

After the break up of the ‘Streetband’ Paul went on to form the Q-Tips but never really broke into the music business in a major way. By 1982 after much hard work and the splitting up of the Q-Tips, Paul was spotted and signed to a recording contract with CBS records as a solo performer.

One of his first singles as a solo artist came in the form of ‘ Love of the Common People’ with the original having been recorded by Nicky Thomas  and then ‘Iron out the Rough Spots’ neither of which made much of an impact on the music scene.

Paul’s third single release, ‘Wherever I Lay my Hat (that’s my home), the cover of Marvin Gaye’s original classic recorded in 1964. For Paul it gave him a number 1 hit single in the UK singles charts in the summer of 1983, and it remained at number 1 for three weeks. It was the first of 14 top 40 hits for Paul. Paul had adopted a soulful, soft easy sound which lead to his consequent success all over Europe with his singles and albums, ‘Non Parlez’ and ‘The Secret of Association’. This second album also went a long way to making him the well received artist he was to become in the USA.

In 1983 Paul met his wife to be, model, Stacey Smith and after marrying her the couple had three children but announced their separation in May 2006. When Bob Geldof and Midge Ure put together a group of 1984 bands to perform on the Band Aid single ‘Do They Know its Christmas?’, Paul was one of the first to volunteer his services to the charity single when he lined up alongside George Michael, Bono, Sting and Duran Duran.

His greatest success was to follow in 1985 with a cover version of the Daryl Hall hit, ‘Everytime You go Away’. Paul’s career went from strength to strength when he was asked to perform at Nelson Mandela’s 70th Birthday tribute in 1988 when he sang ‘Don’t dream its Over’. Once again Paul was to appear alongside another famous act when in 1992 he sang ‘Radio Ga Ga’ with the British group Queen in a tribute to the late Freddie Mercury.

For several years Paul has suffered with throat problems which have periodically put pay to his appearances and recording schedules. Since 2002 when Paul released a self titled album with Los Pacaminos he has been somewhat illusive on the music scene.
