Pharrell Williams is known as a very successful record producer in the hip hop genre He’s also had recognition as a recording artist and songwriter. Pharrell was born in 1973 in Virginia. One of his brothers, Cato Williams, is a professional skateboarder.

Pharrell and Chad Hugo formed a production team and called themselves The Neptunes. They signed a deal with producer Teddy Riley and worked steadily throughout the 1990s. The Neptunes produced for Riley’s group, BLACKstreet, SWV and Mase. They developed their own production sound and had their first big hit in 1998 with Superthug for N.O.R.E. After this, they produced for Kelis, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Mystikal and Diddy.

In 2001, Pharrell Williams launched his recording career with a debut album as lead singer and drummer with N*E*R*D. They played funk rock, and the other members were Chad Hugo and Shae Haley. Pharrell can also play guitar and keyboards. The Neptunes continued as successful producers, working with Britney Spears, Nelly, and Justin Timberlake. They also produced a string of hit singles for Jay-Z. A follow up N*E*R*D album was released in 2004. In the same year, Pharrell performed at the Grammy Awards, with the early Beatles song, I Saw Her Standing There. He played drums in a band comprising of Sting, Dave Matthews, and Vince Gill.

Pharrell Williams released his solo debut album, In My Mind, in 2005. The first single from the album featured Gwen Stefani and a subsequent single was a collaboration with Kanye West. Daddy Yankee featured on another track. Despite contributions from various stars in the music industry, the sales from this project were disappointing.

Movies have also played a part in the career of Pharrell Williams. He has separately and together with Chad Hugo, supplied songs for film soundtracks. Shake Ya Ass was used in martial arts movie Kiss of the Dragon starring Jet Li, Bridget Fonda and Burt Kwouk. The hit song was also used in About A Boy, starring Hugh Grant, Toni Collette, and Rachel Weisz. Head of State, directed by and starring Chris Rock, featured another song by Pharrell. Bernie Mac and Dylan Baker co-starred in the film. Two of Pharrell’s songs were also used in Bad Boys II, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

Pharrell’s popularity has also led to some television time. In July of 2006 he hosted an entire day of programming on BET, including a special segment where the star picked his own favorite videos to air. In August of 2006 Pharrell made a special guest appearance with Clipse on MTV’s Wild and Out featuring Nick Cannon.

Astronomy and science fiction have been lifelong interests for Pharrell Williams, and among his idols he cites Carl Sagan. As a tribute to Star Trek, Pharrell named his record label, Star Trak. Pharrell has had some high profile romantic liaisons, including Jade Jagger and Christina Aguilera.
